it was really touching yet nothing to do with rock really
it's really amazing to think of the places emo has gotten to, the diversity of things "emo" can mean

considering it come from one of th the most rockist rock scenes ever - not just original 80s hardcore (the punk kind) but D.C. hardcore, the truest of all hardcore scenes

and not just the truest of all scenes, but the truest of all bands of that scene - Minor goddamn Threat

(or really The Faith, Ian Mackaye's brother's band - Embrace was the Faith with Ian replacing his brother Alec as singer - but still)

not that Ian Mackaye would embrace (no pun) or advocate rockism I reckon but still - even Fugazi (not emo, but still) is inherently rockist af

I'm way too young to have been there for Embrace + Rites of Spring, and still too young for heyday - mid-late 90s - of screamo, tho I did catch the tail end of that. wasn't my thing but I knew it.

emo in the Dashboard Confessional, Bright Eyes, sense was 100% not my thing, but it did retain a punk/diy ethos + sensibility, had those roots, which is the last time "emo" necessarily did

and then after that it flares to mean almost anything - a particular teenage subculture, a synonym for angsty, arena bands that have basically fuck all to do with those historical roots

not a value judgment or anything, just a fascinating microhistory to me

not that genre names, and adjectives, can't change over time to mean different things

but usually that change isn't so radical, not just in the type of music it describes but in the nature of term itself

nothing to do with Skrillex except tangentially - he does retain a bit of an emo sensibility, I think, however you want to take that - but interesting to me

as Skrillex's own music everything I've heard - not a ton but some - is completely uninteresting

not even bad - at least that can be interesting - just boring

admittedly that's the large majority of art in general, of all kinds - it's hard to make memorable things

and he seems like a very nice dude - his Nardwuar came across so anyway - so more power to him, and his fans like it, more power to them

Completely uninteresting?! It's surely anything but that. It's hilarious. I can't imagine anyone sitting through it completely unmoved. It's so merrily silly.

It's like thirdforms music.myou can listen to it and go my god this is absolutely fucking awful, you can listen to it and go this is absolutely hilarious but you can't pretend to be unmoved. It's making such an effort jumping up and down and pulling silly faces.

He put on a very good show on the Other Stage at Glastonbury a few years back, must have been 2014. I was tripping pretty hard and there with my brother. It was overwhelming, fluorescent maximalism. And it was funny, that was the point. Bitter toffee blitzed in a blender with pickled strawberries.

no, that is exactly what I find it

I hear EDM all the time diagetically @ the gym and out in the world. I remember when dubstep went wobble. I know most of his other influences.

he doesn't combine them in an interesting way, and he doesn't do anything they don't already do better in their own ways.

everything is calculated and professional - he puts on a good show, as people say

how that's exciting in any way, idk

I mean if you all like him, cool. I'm just telling you what I think.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Skrillex never went far enough.

To me this supports luka's statement about it being too easy to go all the way.

Especially with this sort of hackeneyed ideal of extremity too - industrial grinding, never heard that before!

Course I might be underrating it cos I can't listen to it for more than five seconds cos it's the worst thing I've ever heard in my life.

Beyond pleasure lies pain but also boredom.

It's actually far more labour intensive than yer regular love song. whether that makes it easy is another debate yes, but don't pretend there is an undiscovered vista of unhackneyed tropes by now in 2019.

also what's so great about the pitchfork beatniks corpsey? woebot was right the avantyobs have always had it more in favour of them.

modernism can't be infinite can it? otherwise it just ends up fetishising any old crap. it too has its limits, which were mostly exhausted by the advent of house/techno and sampling, and dub itself was the end of compositional modernism in a very real sense. the notion of the same riddim or recycled versions would be heresy to true modernists, especially serialists who wanted everything to be totally randomised. Since then it's been recombinations of the old to create the (re-versioned) new.

this one also some primo avant-brostep, bassline doesn't even have a dub bass correlate by this point, it's sheer machinegun bullets pinging off stalagtites.

the problem with revivals isn't that they happen, it's that the people who have read the nuum theory are so obsessed with ejaculating over the same 20 records that they have nowhere else left to go as they don't look into the gaps to accentuate the other tendancies that get discarded. so it's like surrogate sociology which is fucking wank. I need to get some synths and make some belgian revivalist dembow drumfunk gabba stuff i think

classic choon, and great post.

I listened to classical music pretty exclusively until I was maybe 14—a small-town "I hate popular culture it's so simplistic and unsophisticated!" rejection that probably had a lot to do with hating most of the people in my classes, school—elevation above them as ego defense etc
