most cities' streets developed organically over time and as such are rather geometrically arbitrary. they curve and bend and meander. they're tangled and intertwined. they're more akin to nature's randomness rather than feeling at all deliberate.

new york is different. new york is pre-planned, it's streets are divided into clear grids. straight lines and "blocks".

as such it's only natural that it's inhabitants are drawn to a notion that there's an underlying mathematical order to the world as there's one to their immediate environment. hence all the new york rapper's 5%er mathematics.

I wonder how much of that's down to Bob Moses.

Luka it doesn't feel good having the political air leveraged against you underhanded like that. It feels, I don't know, sardonic. Like, it could be playful but the with the current political discourse on the internet there's something a little bit sinister to it.

I'd rather be called a cunt to my face than that.

Sometimes I try to say things that I know others will think are extremely lame, or overly earnest. But there's humanity in lameness, the expressions unadulterated of 'cool'. I do this to lower the bar of lameness to make others feel less anxious about hitting it. These are siren songs of sympathy. Sacrifice on the altar of compassion. It's quite admirable.

"You tried to predict movements in the yen by drawing on patterns from nature. Yes, of course. The mathematical properties of tree rings, sunflower seeds, the limbs of galactic spirals. I learned this with the baht. I loved the baht. I loved the cross-harmonies between nature and data. You taught me this. The way signals from a pulsar in deepest space follow classical number sequences, which in turn can describe the fluctuations of a given stock or currency. You showed me this. How market cycles can be interchangeable with the time cycles of grasshopper breeding, wheat harvesting. You made this form of analysis horribly and sadistically precise. But you forgot something along the way."

"What?"

"The importance of the lopsided, the thing that's skewed a little. You were looking for balance, beautiful balance, equal parts, equal sides. I know this. I know you. But you should have been tracking the yen in its tics and quirks. The little quirk. The misshape."

"The misweave."

That's ok. I don't know where you get the idea that I am hostile to this or that I don't also do this. I like to play games but hopefully they are games that allow for earnestness.

i don't know what the fuck's going on. everything seemed fine to me.

this- like all the other dissensus spats- is a case of us living in completely different universes. reading the exact same posts and getting something completely different out of them.

It's like a law of physics. Things aren't allowed to progress past a certain point.

Didn't think it was hostile but I understand how it could be construed as more than playful. Don't know where craner stands politically but when you're around people that are more to the left and you start talking about things like that, its understandable that you get a bit jumpy and responsive to insinuations.

I don't know how to say this without it sounding like I'm defending the actual right, but you see this on the internet where the atmosphere gets real cynical and cavalier real quick sometimes and people are ganged up upon and called things that they aren't.

And it could feel a little bit like you knew about this tendency, and craner knew that you knew about it, and you were kinda leveraging those stakes against him.

Wasn't there a bit of tension there? I wasn't tryna start a fight, just tried to weigh in, but maybe it didn't go very well

don't worry, nothing to do with you. we just have this strange ritual we all do every three months.

that's healthy in all relationships and communities. I always say that you need one absolute bender every once and again, where all the wretchedness comes out. Lose some friends, make some new ones. Shake things up a bit.
