The Student Must Kill the Master

It's very good when you discover someone who has been barking up the same tree as you. For me it's very very rare. So I try and make friends with them. Write to them. Try and impress them.

Let me find the first letter Prynne wrote to Olson.

"Reading your various things was like reading for the first time the back of my own hand."

Lure them in and then DESTROY THEM.

This is one of the pleasures of reading. That you pick up a book and realise somebody, somewhere was thinking and feeling the way you are. A connection across time and space.

And that, given you have already thought the same things as an acknowledged genius you must also be some kinda genius.

In all seriousness, I feel like an idiot reading stuff like Prynne. I can feel my forehead furrowing trying to get a handle on what he's on about. I get the same thing when I hear Michael Silverblatt interview someone. He'll pluck these things out of a book or come up with them in response to something they've said and I just have no clue.

There's also the phenomenon of the master purposefully hobbling the student. Eg Chris Eubanks with his son.

Remember when Inter Milan wanted to sign Paul Inces son and Paul Ince forbade it and made his kid sign with Hull instead?

Yeah, that was something I had in mind when asking whether the master only succeeds when the student surpasses them. Whether success for the master rests entirely on the development of the student or also lies in self-preservation.

And another one where there's no killing involved just success following another path entirely
