Box breathing

It’s never prescribed because there’s no money in it but it works within minutes

Sounds bollocks, cortisol reduction is no small thing, yet if you compare oxytocin’s physiological effects you can see the similarities and differences

Probably pointless if you love caffeine and nicotine
caffeine and nicotine prevent cortisol levels to fall when doing box breathing?

I've never really been a massive fan of box breathing tbh, but it's really whatever works for the individual. If you're slightly obsessive focusing solely on your breathing can lead to anxiety over having to manually breath and it doesn't do much to quieten an overly busy mind.

It seems obvious to say that people would get a lot more out of taking 5 / 10 / 30 mins for proper meditation / guided relaxation, especially if you want to actually get the benefits of deep breathing. I don't really know any mental health practitioners who wouldn't recommend (prescribe) it when dealing with anxiety, even the CBT textbook followers.

Mindfulness of breath is a corner stone of many mediation / mindfulness / relaxation techniques. In Buddhism the term for the permanent self or soul is Ātman, which also translates as essence, or breath. Buddha himself recommended breath meditation, saying it was something he discovered by accident as a child & going back to it as an adult brought him more enlightenment than all the religious studying he had done to that point.

If you need an alternative quick mindfulness technique I quite like this one. Close your eyes, then find 3 to 5 separate sounds you can hear. Then find 3/5 things you can physically feel. It's quite good for taking your out of your head, placing you back in the physical world & often at least one of the things will be related to breath.

how does anxiety manifest? what happens when you are suffering from anxiety? a friend of mind says hes just caught it over the last two years and its intrusive thoughts, imagining his loved ones having bad accidents and that

I had an intense attack of it the other night, lying there thinking about how my brain is this relatively small thing that would be easy to crush and that the universe (effectively) exists for me in that small, vulnerable thing.

This is related to a recent obsession I've developed with death which is really harshing my mellow TBH

I'm very aware of my parents ageing and can't stop thinking about how little time we have left. And what could be lurking in the near future.

Very aware that I need something like mindfulness to take control over what I'm thinking about, because it's very easy to lose the plot.

I find it helps if you think about thermonuclear war instead, don't know if this works for anyone else

so its often a thinking thing rather than like, shallow breathing, tightness in chest, elevated heart rate?

a good thing craner said to me is "i dont grant weakness admittence. if weakness knocks on my door and begs for an audience i dont grant it an audience. i slam the door on weakness." he said "weakness is insidious. if you let it in its very hard to get it to leave"

thats was really good advice and ive always followed it

“Racing thoughts” is a broad church plus world changing events takes some processing power

The sound/touch sense exercise @Trillhouse outlined is good. Parental ageing @Corpsey ? Brutal. The farce of social care, depleting time and quality of life have all been hammered last 22 months. A mate is locked in a cycle with his Mum’s dementia and melanomas, siblings vying for power of attorney. Grim. Not many look back at losing a parent and think “we were completely on top of everything, no regrets”

Life is short, if you’re experiencing issues there is help

you should always think that you are god and that you are the master of the universe and the most important thing in it

you should always think that the entire process of evolution was designed to culminate with you. you are the reason for all of it and its perfection and end point.

you should never ever think of yourself as insignificant you are the only thing of significance. nothing has significance outside of its relationship to you. you are the centre of all things.
