i hope mvuent brings some grime sensibilities back to minneapolis. he's walking through some idyllic americana like the beggining of blue velevet; white picket fences, apple pies, the lot. a kindly old man who fought in the korean will beckon him over, "here son, i don't suppose you could help me with this motor?" he'll ask as he pops the bonnett of an antique muscle car. mvuent suddenly turns and start spitting furious lyrics saying that he's going to slap the poor gentleman's nan.

mvuent do you think you could ever enjoy this stuff as music or will it always be a removed, slightly comical anthropological exploration?

i like that all messages to mvuent are sent transatlantically by messenger pigeon. it's endearing in this age of rapid fire instant messaging. a throwback to a more considered time.

One of the things about grime was, there was no second generation. It taught me something about talent, or at least it made me think about talent. I assumed there would be a constant conveyer belt of London MCs, and that didn't happen.

he's a clever one to bring up in that context.

i wanted to say earlier in the thread (but worried that i was just always banging on about the same thing all the time), but the one line flows in grime are a like precursor the more recent style of rapping; that use of mantra like repetition. what i call weaponised, rapid fire amnesia.

He's gone to all that effort to prepare you a playlist and throw it back in his face like that

i was thinking more of the production but that's a great point

in the context of the brexit day thread, this thread is like when mum and dad are arguing and you build a fortress under your bed covers and play with your action mans, telling yourslef that you're completely oblivious the the screaming in the other room.

i was very tempted to put this one in, but then thought i needed to take a stand against the retroactive instrumentalisation of grime's history.

there's a thread running throughout the nuum of trying to kick the mc's out; lots of youtube comments under jungle videos, i think grooverider's said he doesn't like mc's, garage dj's blaming mc's for violence and more general longing for the pre-so solid era, instrumental grime, when i was little people kept saying that all those skank songs ruined uk funky.

as the poor bastard from resident advisor found out, it could be argued there's a racial component of this, but it does actually seem to come from contingents of punters. it may well be more of a class thing; people wanting the music to be upwardly mobile.

I'm surprised you didn't stick either of these two in the list.

again, its a selective reading of grime. it misses out that kind of stuff for the most part. is there any terror danger in my playlist (gangsta toys?)? disproportionate waifer i'd imagine.

It's a good list. Good for mvuent as well. I like that it avoids songs in favour of radio snippets. Grime is only what was on radio imo
