The next stage of Mvuent’s chronological, phenomenological journey through the hardcore continuum. It's the sequel- the Empire Strikes Back- to this thread:

https://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=15111

Like Empire it’s darker, grittier, full of classic lines and its everyone’s favourite. (Following this metaphor, that would make a potential UK Funky thread Return of The Jedi, some great bits but ultimately disappointing and full of ewoks).

Playlist looks good, that's my bathtime sorted for tomorrow. I was listening to someone mcing over classic grime instrumentals the other day and it all felt a bit tired. I used to love it all, but it's all so overplayed now.

Why don't it have Eskimo on it? Not nitpicking. That's mandatory that one. Can have Dizzee on Eskimo.

im always a big supporter of threads with my name in the title. however the hell one would actually pronounce my username.

full of classic lines

i probably won’t go much into the mcing / lyrics. i just have too little familiarity with the culture behind it--who the mcs are and how they're known, etc. i know that's the point but i barely understand american rap as it is! maybe some of the many experts around here can help.

at the start there’s chatter about “spitting” at the same time as an otherworldly pad sound. this moment only lasts about 10 seconds but conveys everything. you just instantly know from the juxtaposition that a new (or hybrid) sonic world has opened up.

frantic energy. goofy early 2000s fast rapping combined with overly emotive delivery. a chorus that sounds like a modified nursery rhyme. presumably they were pretty young when they made this.

the sustained buzzing sounds match the pic. evocative of concrete walls, low res images.

whizzing, ricocheting percussion. a lot of nerdy comparisons you could make here. (for example, to the rapidfire swarms of sound in “artikulation” by ligeti.) but also conveying a sense of chaotic action, conflict.

warlike bass. on the prowl. a small crowd intently gathered around in a circle.

mcing is much less frantic. aggressive but, this time, collected and mature.

its easy to fall into the assumption that what i was calling “fog of war” in another thread ends once music starts existing on computers / the internet. but this stuff has a distinctive 144p aesthetic that helps define it. the low res quality creates a sense of flatness, of force and aggression being contained and distanced; a hugely destructive force sealed in a crystal ball.

can’t help but notice the wildly varying lengths of the vids in this playlist, especially compared to the 2step one. 2step was the hardcore continuum understood as proper tunes, i’m gathering that this stuff leans hard in the opposite direction. (of at least did for a time.) even though they’re obviously not all from the same show, i can’t help but think of this playlist as consisting of fragments of an ongoing, structurally protean whole; like the 24 hour never ending talk show in do androids dream of electric sheep?

looks like version brought this up in the same context, raising the question for me again of whether or not I’m unconsciously repeating stuff i’ve seen before, OR if…

is that descending sound a voice? no but close. it has a metallic quality. reflective and convex.

i’m assuming from the delivery that there’s a few decent punchlines in here. something about i banged your mum ofc. “Weigh more than your crew if you're stood on a see-saw” probably still holds true in the era of uk drill, based of the videos i've seen here.

it cuts off. another fragment.

"you could be black white or half-cast, you'll get bun at half past" is the funniest thing any human being has ever said ever. it's in stiff competetion with "why's the sky blue, why's water wet, why'd judas rat the roman's while jesus slept" as my favourite lyric ever.

"i haven't got a gun, but i could get one" is also great.

There's some set where Rkio's chatting between tunes and he says something like "I haven't lost a fight... actually I have lost a few fights, but I'll fuckin' shoot ya, bruv!".

i love that riko goes "you're not even good". its such a childing thing to do. like at school when a teacher kicks out someone for talking and they go "miss i wasn't even talking" even though they clearly were (but in that moment they're somehow genuinely indignant that they weren't).

That clip from the Roll Deep documentary when Riko comes into the studio while they're listening back to Morgue is good.

4:23

"I bring two out, take your whole crew out... "
