This hadn't occurred to me before—now we live in the era of YouTube tutorials. Hence (I guess) the professionalism of drill beats. Cleaner sounding, heavier hitting, better in cars and clubs... but less charming and anarchic. Nobody makes anything which makes you think "you're not supposed to do that!'

* Not to shit on drill beats at all (or grime beats for that matter), in actual fact I find the production level in uk rap now amazingly high. But on a *beats* level there's none of that charming slight amateurishness that you had in grime.

It's harder to fuck it up now too. Everything sounds tidy more or less out of the box, no tweaking, so someone with basically no experience making tunes could just dump samples and presets and have something passable right off the bat without really having to know anything about EQ, mixing, effects etc.

Tricky talks a bit about this in his biog, how when he was making maxinquaye the engineer kept telling him that things were in the wrong key and wouldnt work etc, but he insisted. That album in particular is a proper one off, and he is very clear now that its because he didnt know what he was doing

mega fan. listening to pre-mil a lot at the mo, also recently realised awdf is actually great, i mean slight slacking off lyrically from 1st two but still great, amazing beats, moods, pressure, somehow bit more organic/live feel...sounds (and feels like) like 23 skidoo meets the wu. wanna hear the whole freakin cat now, don't trust settled opinion on him at all. twas crazy how quickly press wanted to dump him after (deserved) hype for maxinquaye. 'nearly god' great too of course...

also - please get over shitty on-the-nose title pre-mil is a STONKING masterpiece. sonically rougher, richer, edgier (if that's poss) than max, perhaps even more of a singular and perverse offering; like he just picked it all up from brill b-side max cut 'strugglin' and did a whole album out of that vibe... i guess people thought twas bit too obvious darkness at the time but fuck it, shit IS dark, even darker now. .

I just listened through Maxinquaye and still don't really get it. It's got a cool atmosphere, some nice production, but it's just a bit naff to my ears. The trip-hop thing in general feels that way to me - Portishead, Massive Attack. There's always something that stops me properly getting into it.

What’s interesting about the 90’s is that it’s best music and its most embarrassing music are both made of the same ingredients (rap, dub, rave).

So it’s funny that jungle can be my favourite music ever whereas massive attack is excruciatingly embarrassing.

I love tricky. One of my favourite artists of all time. Him vs Goldie (who I do also like) is no contest.

a lot of you won't be aware of the existence of mvuent but hes been an active member of the board for some time now and he is coming to the uk on the 1st of september confirmed. hes never been drunk or done drugs or anything sexual in his life before so hes quite naive and exploitable and if you want to do bad things to him sign up here. also if you want to let him sleep in your cupboard or cellar then say so. let me know if theres anyone i should add to this group who might be interested in doing weird things to him.
