And yes, it was Oakeshott who originated the Cameron/pig rumour. Which I'm sure we all *wanted* to be true, at the time, but...

Thoughtful piece about the interaction of Brexit, covid, and the general economic malaise the country was in even before those things happened.

Staff shortages, whether due to Brexit or Covid, are now endemic and are contributing to a metaphorical rottenness in which quite basic things are becoming difficult or impossible to do. They are part of the reason for the crisis in the NHS, to take the most high-profile example. But it is the same across the board. There aren’t enough border agency staff, there aren’t enough staff to run buses or to serve meals in restaurants or to construct buildings. Nor has the HGV driver shortage, so much in the news last year, gone away. It would be possible to provide any number of examples, but almost everyone is surely now beginning to notice how many of the things we used to take for granted just don’t work properly any more. Raising wages isn’t the answer: it may pull staff into one sector, but only at the expense of another, and in the absence of productivity increases it only creates inflation which more than negates the wages rises anyway.

So the wage rises for truckers that John was so excited about a year ago are, in the absence of an increase in productivity, bad news for everyone else, and eventually bad news for the truckers, too.

I don't get this thing with the Tories doing this constant, concerted attack on (part of) the "oven ready deal" - every single day loads of them brief or tweet or - for all I know - shout from clifftops using a megaphone about how bad it is, how we were tricked into signing it by the EU, how the EU are unreasonably insisting that people ought to stick to their side of a deal that they made, how it's so disastrous that they need to unilaterally break it. When every single one of those statements is an admission of stupidity or mendacity on their part - they wrote the deal, they insisted that it was so good it didn't need to be scrutinised, they railroaded the country into accepting it and so on... why make constantly moaning about themselves such a central part of their current tactics? And why does anyone give their position the (admittedly small) amount of credence that they apparently do?

It would be an odd thing for GBeebies to crow about, unless they've fallen out with him for reason. I would dearly love it to be true, though.

Actually JRM would probably have it flown in by private helicopter, wouldn't he?

I am worried about what will happen to people in Hungary and Poland, because my politics are genuinely internationalist and are not based on a narrow caricature of continental urban sophistication like the EU flag wavers you see at protests. The EU and the UK government do not appear to be worried about these people. So in my view it is a problem that is connected to Brexit (both are symptoms of economic decline) but also distinct from it (neither the EU or the UK govt appear to give a shit about gay people in Hungary).
Well this a turn-up for the books:

It is quite funny that brexit is being blamed for increasing numbers of refugees crossing the channel and UK's inability to stop them. Suck on that you racist cunts!
