Any threads discussing this? It feels intuitively right though.

No. I've been working up to one though. There's stuff like

Is a counter culture still possible though and culture as advertising

Which are exploring the same territory

Not entirely sure how we got bogged down discussing the minutiae of the fitness industry for four pages

I'll start one tomorrow - I'll think about it overnight. Padraig's comment above was apposite though, about not having time to do exercise.

I've never been inside the gym but I'm actually very interested in it just cos it's part of reality and the social and people's sense of self and blah blah blah

I think it's because we don't have a real shared vocabulary for discussion, as well as my shortcomings of explanation

your perception is (no offense) entirely thru observation rather than participation

which isn't invalid or anything, and I 100% agree it's totally interesting unto itself just as part of the social fabric etc

it does deserve its own thread - I guess in Thought?

I'm quite interested generally in things like physical culture, its place in society, relation to identity (gender and otherwise) and larger politics, etc

as well as the relation of the fitness industry to actual fitness, hypermasculinity to hypercapitalism, etc

I don't know how to corral those interests into a productive Dissensus thread tho

Maybe we were talking about different things. But Danny is up for a fitness thread anyway. Baboon used to be a power lifter. Corpseys is a bodybuilder. Come lately is a body builder.

some of those interests I think correspond to the topic of this thread - literal and symbolic muscularity, and the relationship between them

how notions of patriotism, masculinity, etc evolve and relate to one another

are any of these for real? out of curiosity

I wouldn't call myself either of those things. Tho the powerlifting lifts (and supplemental work) are one of my main things, along with kettlebells, plyometrics, etc.

There's a very interesting guy I follow on IG named Marcus Filly, whose brand is "Functional Bodybuilding"

his background I believe was initially bodybuilding, then got into Crossfit up to a very high level, now he does his own thing

it's notable for being about functional movement but incorporating bodybuilding stuff within that context; he's a super legit dude too

anyway fire up a thread, you'll do a better job titling it

woops

is not like other people
There isn't one. This is what Barty keeps saying. There's a complete convergence in the way accelerationism always advocated. There's no oppositional element in culture anymore. There is only one thing not two things.

this goes also for the distinction between underground and commercial crap that was such a big deal for me as an indie kid fanzine reader and lover of obscure indie labels with limited editions of handmade sleeves before these become relevant only as something you couldn't download from the internet
