Ive always found gyms reasonably friendly wih a fairly broad range of clientele, except the one I briefly went to in sydenham where someone allegedly got stabbed. Let that guy go on the lat pulldown machine, it's not worth the hassle.

This thread hasn't quite gone how I wanted it to, so far. I suppose there's an irony to hoping for intellectual content from a thread about working out but I was hoping for more (personal or otherwise) thoughts on what the gym and exercise culture are *doing* in 2020? What does it do *to you* to participate - or fail to do so?

Rollins point about realising he had that sort of control over something - in this case, his body - is good. There are a bunch of nasty places that need for control can go, so if it ends up going into just lifting weights for some then more power to them.

I half agree. The thing is, the lack of imagination. Yeah fine, you find you can affect something positively with DISCIPLINE and WILLPOWER. I get it. It's a powerful thing. Said it here before. But there's way more more fun and cool stuff to apply that focussed effort to. Eg dancing or being clever. Or hacky sack. It's so mechanical and dopey.

It's like going I want the girl I fall in love with to have the biggest tits in the world. It's an infant desire. It's idiotic.

Well, he was a kid in school when he started doing it. It was a teacher who got him into it.
