I think it was Mike Tyson I heard saying that he told his son that he'd be absolutely crazy to be a boxer, and that the only people who should take up such a dangerous sport do so because they've got nothing else to live for.

There's loads of his stuff on Youtube. He's kinda proto-MMA in a way as he emphasised the need to learn grappling to win in "real fights". I keep on getting shown shit guides to street fighting via Youtube, 'cos I look at martial arts stuff, and they all strike me as utter bollocks. With him, you know it's based on real experiences.

i find it weird how there's this perception (that i share) that fitness culture has gotten more mainstream, and that everyone's obsessed with fitness these days, when really the vast majority of people in the US are more sedentary and overweight than ever. maybe there's a certain segment of the population (like ~15%, or even lower?) that really has reached new heights of physical fitness compared to previous generations, while the rest of us not so much. it seems like another case where, as democratized as social media is supposed to be, it gives you a very inaccurate picture of what's really going on.

the people who work out brag about endlessly on social media. the lardbuckets are hardly going to tweet every day about how they haven't moved off the couch.

I think that's because of the split between those that primarily remain at home and those that go out, socialize, be seen. In my experience, fitness types are over represented among young white dudes (the mainstream) who have active, out-in-the-world social lifes.

It's become a competitive thing and the lardasses feel ridiculous about getting involved.

Also people are catering to different audiences: some men competing for women who like fit men and dadbods competing for women who like the fuller figure...feedback effects keep them in their place.

Its also just something to do. An approved and curated interest. Most jobs accommodate to fitness types

yeah

i guess it's not so much the motivation of the fitness freaks that's weird to me. after all, they seem like the "rational" ones here. everyone should be working out and eating right, or at least not actively killing ourselves with a completely sedentary lifestyle. it's more that fact that so many people have apparently just gone "fuck it, i'm not going to take a single positive measure" that's unsettling. obviously free time and motivation will vary--but are they really so stratified? it still seems like another instance of a popular Things Are Getting Better narrative that's really misleading. "fitness is for everyone now!" "10 years ago if you did weight training you were an asshole, now it's part of a normal person's routine" ...just, statically, apparently not? a lot of narratives like that around imo.

it is odd, the only people who went the gym when I was growing up were football players. someone who worked in an office would "exercise" by going for walks on the weekend, LOL!

then again, some areas are heavy in blue-collar manual labor, so their workouts come from 9-to-5. they're plopping in front of the TV on off times, not going to the gym.

I wonder whether manual labour produces more practical/functional strength than just lifting weights in the gym, or whether it doesn't really matter and strength is just strength.

a gym muscle looks puffy and balloon like. a work muscle is insanely dense and striated and wirey. massive, massive difference between training for hypertrophy and display and real muscle. they look completely different.

There's "old man strength' too. I remember this drunk, old Scottish bloke shaking my hand outside someone's flat and his grip was like a vice. He had that carved out of wood look that Beckett had.
