I'm in tribeca. Diets, 'nutrition', exercise that changes the contours of your body, these are the cultural zeitgeist aren't they. This is where the energy is, the most change, the most new stuff, people committing and building their lives around it.

I'm in the window of a cafe and every man that walks past is looking at the sexy blonde girl sitting next to me, it's quite comprensive. They don't even register me even when I'm looking right at them.

That's not true, Shaka. I saw you.

On your first point, I so fucking hate atheleisurewear. Why is it so hard to wear a shirt and trousers? Why do you always need to be "comfortable", and look like you're going to or coming from the gym. That's not style, it's pathetic.

I do always like to be comfortable, is that really so strange or unreasonable?

I mean yes and no. You have to remember that at the same time over 40% of adult Americans are obese.

it's a pretty wild split that is thoroughly tangled up with things like class and race

Manhattan, SF, etc is exactly where you'd find that kind of $$ == health

it's not new tho - think of the endless reams of American Psycho devoted to yuppie obsession with gym, nutrition, as a function of appearance

certainly the fitness industry is centered around affluent clients, just like every other industry tied to disposable income

what's new, meaning last 10-20 years, is trends within fitness itself - the huge shift toward "functionality", the desire for authenticity (i.e. investment bankers getting into boxing in the same way they get into techno), the massive strides in nutrition, biomechanics, etc

all of that colliding with startup culture, social media, etc

selling health to the wealthy is the same as ever, it's just what's being sold, how it's marketed, etc

the fitness world is also, let me say, is difficult to navigate for most people, in my experience

fitness in that sense is like money or computers - things that people are intimidated by if they're illiterate

not so much fitness itself but the supplement industry especially is a vast sea of snake oil

(the only legit supplement - besides steroids etc - is creatine. protein powder if you want to consider that a supplement. basically everything else is just marketing.)

anyway I don't think the zeitgeist is really fitness, so much as that advances in fitness have made more effective fitness available to yuppies

sorry I'm pretty blazed and I'm kind of rambling

just to say I think about this A LOT - appearance vs performance

like for the vast majority of people they just want to look good and could give zero fucks about much they can lift or how fast they can do something, or in a more general sense, how healthy they are

there is a correlation between appearance and performance but it's not as strong as you think, and at a certain point you just have to choose one or the other

like that's what glamor muscles refers to. the classic iteration is dudes who bench hella but "skip leg day".

ironically the people with the best aesthetic bodies - gymnasts, wrestlers, dancers, Olympic weightlifters, etc - all train for functionality

which all, whatever, I just spend a lot of time observing gym culture and this amuses/bemuses me

I myself have always been too concerned with being shredded (i.e. super lean)

this last time I got back in the gym after an injury hiatus I decided I was just going to eat enough to really get stronger

bit less lean than normal but I deadlifted 435 today - that's 197kg for you Europeans, at a body weight of ~78kg - which is a 20# PR

similar PRs in strict press, back squat, front squat, etc

decided I want to make an honest effort to get decent at Olympic weightlifting too

cleaned 235 on Monday. technique needs a lot of work there tho, let alone on the snatch.

also leo jesus christ this is the hardest I've ever seen you condemn anything by far

I know I just came down hard on baseball but you're so more genial than I am

athleisure of all things

it's no offense pretty silly too. like what do you care? why the hell should anyone have to wear a "shirt and trousers"?

how a three piece suit any more or less pathetic? what a word to apply to clothing.

it is a take so endearingly corny that you have to respect it I'll say

hard as nails too. you're anti-comfort.

Absolutely, when I go to a sports centre and walk through to the room where my activity is, if I go through the weight-lifting room it's really odd. I feel totally intimidated by all these weird machines, often looming over me in quite a sinister fashion and people calling out to each other all these strange words I have never even heard before.

yeah, was an impulsive overreaction but it's still annoying. Atheleisurewear as a style choice is a lazy, mass blanding that must be opposed. plenty of ways to be comfortable other than everyone wearing the same boring stretchy fabrics.

Those are impressive numbers man. I'm just getting back it into it again, after 3 months out due to annoying postural dysfunction that gives me a lot of pain. It's not sorted but i thought fuck it, I'd rather be fit and in pain, than just in pain. I have an appointment with an Egoscue Method specialist this week that I hope will sort it out.

My PRs are pretty low. Not really lifted consistently enough over my lifetime to get *strong* as such.

I'm still sticking with Marcus Filly's programming - I agree re. our PM exchange that he is genius of programming. i also wonder if he's on the spectrum a bit as well to be so obsessive about it. I'm doing the simplest program, PIllars, but I might switch it up as I am getting it done in an hour but I don't feel as absolutely worked as I did on the longer routines.

I need a ton more mobility before I could consider Olympic weights again. Working on ankle mobility atm to help my squat but the speed and athleticism required for for Oly lifting currently beyond me.

Ballard enters the weight room.
