Stop talking about the pandemic in the pandemic thread?

More politics than Pandemic. It is revealing, how badly they've been shown up to be useless, but I don't think there's much to add. They're useless, we know that. But the wider inadequacies in the global system are interesting and underrated. Who cares about the UK? Fuck it.

I think that politics and the pandemic tend to have an effect on each other. Personally I care about the UK cos most of my friends are there but maybe you don't have that issue. If you think that there is a more interesting point to be made then why not make it instead of moaning about its lack?

If Your So Indifferent To The UK Then Why Dont You Go Live There?

I guess the last chance for the current immunity concept is that the likes of Ireland and New Zealand with very few cases will get smashed to shit in the second wave as no-one has any resistance while the UK rides it out as all the vulnerable are locked away and major cities have developed some kind of immunity/resilience.

If the winter wave takes a good run at the UK for the second time there will be no defense

Something like 80 or 90% of the population needs antibodies for herd immunity to occur. We're on less than 7% at the moment.

I don't think it's possible tbh but don't think those antibody tests tell the real story either. The t-cell immunity doesn't show on tests.

I've read in a few places 40% would be enough to make a substantial change in potential uptake

More for HMGT from Marina Hyde.
The scientific evidence of face coverings … that’s been growing. So I do think that in shops it’s very important to wear a face covering.” “Face covering”! I wonder if Boris called condoms “penis coverings” when he wasn’t wearing those. Over the past long months of dealing with the coronavirus, perhaps the prime minister has often been forced to point out that he is just one of those guys who is too big for masks. Maybe they cut off his circulation or something. Normally, he might suggest, countries prefer the sensation of being governed by a maskless Boris Johnson. So … this feels like it’s your problem, not his?

I could, of course, point out that the bare death count is only the tip of the iceberg because we're seeing so many people who've "recovered" from covid-19 showing serious and probably irreversible organ damage, but I'm boring even myself by pointing that out.

Would need precise figures and whether the proportion of dead:ill has changed significantly.
I don't get it. You've had this bug yourself and by your own admission you're still not quite 'better'. Wouldn't you rather not have caught it in the first place?

Monthly catch up with an old friend last night. NHS staff have the darkest humour. How else can you stay sane? He sounded rattled for the first time though because, as he outlined in layman’s terms, the R- rates don’t factor in mutations or a possible drop off in immunity, which will be autumn’s and 2021’s gifts in his professional opinion.

Telegraph ;) reports on signs of 'double protection' in new ChAdOx1 vaccine trial out of Oxford. i.e. long-lasting killer T-cell immunity as well as antibody immunity response. It's behind a paywall, so I can't share. Results to be published in Monday's Lancet

Oxford are hoping to have this vaccine match fit in September, insha'Allah.

Who cares what she thinks, apart from Guardian readers? And who cares what they think?
I always thought your name was ironic, didn't realise it was cos you were being employed to dismiss points critical of the government. Hiding in plain sight I suppose.

It's interesting that now Vallance is saying that SAGE advised IMMEDIATE lockdown on 16th March but Johnson delayed a week.
