Have any opinions on where to direct the energy instead?
The general sentiment behind what Naomi Klein was getting at in the Screen New Deal article. Not that we need to be solely focused on some incoming sinister tech dystopia, but the naming of real actors out there making specific propositions in an attempt to capitalize on the pandemic.

Yeah I don't think it has dawned on people, the sheer scope of the abstract power held by the tech types. Administering what information spreads, and how fast, and what is associated with what. A frontier of power.

By the time enough of the populous consists of people who grew up with this stuff, who knows how smart and partisan our built world will be? Not to say that architecture has ever been free of ideology, but the entanglement seems to be tightening no? (Digital architecture, I suppose; creation of online spaces, guides/channels for attention flows.

And frankly I get the sense that even some of the tech guys, as smart as they are, don't pick up on the significance, really. Even if they have sweeping intentions, I think they are wielding even bigger guns than they think they are.

Moving ever more robustly into the kind of system in which every cog is not only smart, but capable of abiding the bias of its creator/programmer. Intentionally or not. And the cogs are getting finer, sharper, more intricately arranged. More and more of the world will be predisposed one way or the other, seeing as more and more of the world is of our creation, no?

has everyone in the UK had texts/emails from NHS asking them to download the track and trace app? What are people doing?

It's working even more today!

Either this is the most important and effective public health policy ever, at least since John snow figured out that filthy water pump in Soho, or this is ALL BULLSHIT by CUNTS

Not yet, but will delete it if I get one. It's not even an NHS app, it's sodding Serco, and they've in turn subcontracted the work to a further six companies, none of which Matt Halfcock could name in the HoC.

The fucking twat.
I do think the potential nefarious data issues here are not gonna convince a lot of people. So then will it become law? Are we gonna see another rush bill?

They're appalling. Why would you want something like that in your pocket? Totally unnecessary, a colossal invasion of privacy, flimsy, expensive and just another tool of control.

I went to a wishy-wishy halfway-house when I got a new smartphone in the spring, and made a conscious decision not to install any social media apps on it (had three on my previous phone!). It does at least mean I'm looking at it a lot less throughout the day, although I can still come on here for some mutual abuse with you lot. x
