Yes obviously. I don't really get this... we're trying to say what will happen so there is an element of guesswork, also it's in the future so it hasn't happened yet. I don't disagree but I'm not sure it needs saying.

I have to wonder how the government could achieve any more control than they have already, or what good it would do them. The state already has a monopoly on violence, and unlike America, the only people here who own guns are either farmers or gangsters. They know everything we're thinking about because most of us broadcast it on social media for all to see, before you even consider actual surveillance.

Leo is absolutely right. Happy people spend money, don't make trouble and don't demand change when there's an election. Boris Johnson is an amoral, self-serving prick, not the dark lord Sauron. No government benefits by needlessly immiserating the population and fucking over businesses.

all of that is true enough which is why i keep saying it all depends on what is around the next corner. if everything is due to stay the same, no resource squeeze, no land squeeze, no mass unemployment, no catastrophic climate change, no massive displacement of peopes etc then what you say holds.

this is why the notion of The Great Reset is compelling. It plays on our dim sense that change is afoot and that decisions about how to meet those changes have already been made at the highest levels. this is pure speculation of course, reading entrails, but thats not to say there is no supporting evidence. i dont know why i bother saying these things cos i'll just be met with mad irrelevant squawking

my sense of how the world works is, as you know, men in a smoky room who make the decisions and then inform the people who have to carry out those decisions. so if there was, for instance, a strategy to deal with runaway climate change, you wouldnt be privvy to it and nor would the vast majority of elected offcials.

I see what you're saying but I think assuming that they're thinking that far ahead is giving them too much credit. I think they just don't give a fuck and are more interested in making money for themselves and their mates while they can. Whatever happens in 20, 30 years time is immaterial, since it'll be the little people who actually suffer, as usual.

reins. i dont think climate change is idealism though. assuming its real it presents very practical problems that need solutions. eg closing borders and letting migrants die at the gates.
