someone commented underneath saying those pharmaceutical companies have been slow on rolling out their vaccines so that the virus has more chance to mutate and so there will be more demand for new, adjusted vaccines. it makes sense.

Pfizer paused operations so that the vaccine rolled out after the election.

Speaking to your point, it is a little odd that all of a sudden so many vaccines were ready simultaneously.

Yeah, they've really dragged their feet on this. I mean it's taken them a whole year, what the fuck have they been playing at?!

This is great, I've already seen people saying it's suspicious how quickly the vaccines got developed, and now it's suspicious that it took a year? No pleasing some people I suppose.

Seriously though, @yyaldrin, if you assume no other motive other than to make money - which after all is what companies are for - does it not make sense that there would major financial rewards for whichever company got an effective vaccine on the market first?

but that's also what happened! they all managed to develop a vaccine in a remarkably short time. but i'm talking about the production of the vaccine, which is terribly slow. apart from the uk, usa and israel, hardly anyone is getting vaccinated. and yes this could be cos of all sorts of reasons, the logistical scale for example. but we live in a world where it's more profitable sometimes to let buildings and flats stay empty instead of giving them to the homeless people who are freezing to death outside. or where it's more profitable sometimes to destroy entire crops instead of giving it away or selling it at a lower price while at the same time people are dying from hunger.

Right, but countries that are in lockdown or semi-lockdown are haemorrhaging cash because loads of businesses are closed or only open at greatly reduced capacity, loads of workers are on furlough or simply unemployed, plus it's hugely expensive to treat all the sick people. I can't see any real reason why governments wouldn't want get everyone vaccinated ASAP so they can get back to earning and spending money.

I don't know about America or Israel, but I've seen even people who are strongly anti-Brexit saying that being outside the EU's medicine procurement scheme may actually have helped us to roll it out much sooner.
