Helpfully, this is a year when the idea of getting a holiday was pretty distant due to spending shitloads of £ on other things and my partner in the savage grip of PhD-writing-up - so nothing to cancel. Not sure I've ever booked a holiday more than a month or two in advance anyways.

I'm worried about getting to Antigua in May.

Is it irresponsible or dangerous to travel anywhere?

i was planning to go to naples in may but i'm not sure about it anymore. flights are booked but weren't that expensive. i have yet to book hotel accommodation and might do that with a cancelation option.

they're not quite sure how this virus reacts to spring and summer right?

not sure, but from what I read late April seems likely to be the peak of the pandemic, but that's presumably only based upon many assumptions. And obvs total lockdown changes matters considerably, if it's introduced at the right time in each country (unlikely)

My girlfriend thinks it's all hype and there's no issue in getting on a plane, as long as it's not to Milan or Wuhan. My mother is freaking out, telling me that if I go anywhere near an airport I will be responsible for infecting the whole family before dying myself.

When the public health advice gets released for cremating members of your family in your back garden - dead or infected - it's still going to get made into a meme, isn't it.

Pretty much. Default coping strategy these days.

Re holidays - there's currently no official advice not to, and infection rates aren't out of control in that many places, but airports / planes / public transport do seem like a higher-risk situation and being seriously ill while abroad is probably going to be a bigger deal than at home. So you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Slothrop on point - it's about choice and responsibility. Likelihood is that if you go on holiday, you'll have a higher risk of contracting the virus. And you may not come back anytime soon if they shut down the country while you're there. How much do you really want to go on holiday?

The other thing here is that for most people the arguments for not doing stuff are less "if I don't do X then I can avoid ever getting this" and more "if enough people don't do X Y and Z then we'll slow down the spread to the point where the NHS might be less completely overwhelmed at the point when I (or other people) do get it".

My daughter was due to go to Milan for a day trip weekend before that and we cancelled that.

Wasn't clear if it was the right thing or not at that point but we erred on the side of caution - she has 'A' levels coming up and it seemed like a day in Milan would be pretty unejoyable at that point anyway.

I work with someone who has severe respiratory problems who is very worried and I think will be doing lots of work from home in the near future.

Someone else (a man, obviously) got sent home from the office yesterday because he came in with a fever which he was certain was just flu and not coronavirus. Which did lead to the question of what would happen if he (or a colleague) ended up with flu AND coronavirus.

27 EU leaders meeting to discuss coronavirus.

It's like the UK has let its subscription fee lapse and is now missing out on the all the useful, lifesaving content and tips that The European Union can offer. Who the fuck is Boris Johnson meeting with?
