Rate of infection may be 'just about slowing' in the UK....heard that one before, in Italy and other places. It seems crazy to treat this speculation as news, given that Italy repeatedly thought the peak had been reached, and it turned out that it hadn't....

Of course not surprising that this is given news status since our overlords want us all to return to work as soon as possible, and a few (thousand) deaths here and there is the price to pay as far as they're concerned. Can you imagine what will happen when countries inevitably try to open up again for business before the virus has been contained...? The work pressure, social pressure, mixed messages etc is going to be far more of a headfuck than even anything we've seen so far.

Like that point in Jaws where people gingerly step into the water again, firstly with extreme caution, and then gradually as herd mentality takes over, with abandon. And then someone gets eaten, because hey, the shark's not actually dead!

It may well be that it can't be contained however. That likelihood also needs to be faced up to.

My greatest fear at the moment is that our holiday ends too soon before we have had enough time to rest recuperate reflect and draw the appropriate conclusions.

Beware of small changes in numbers. Its entirely possible to go up/down a bit day to day, but unless the trend is sustained its just random variation.

Could not agree more; same with death rates, small changes do not illustrate a trend.

@ Luka - know what you mean. I'm still working much the same (which feels insane), so I am looking forward to "the return" to some extent...but I don't think it will be any time soon...

I don't think it can be contained completely - eg see South Korea - but we'll have to decide what is an acceptable level of risk. My nightmare is that there will be a very wide variation of understanding around what is acceptable...

Every night I go to bed thinking my quarantine timetable starts tomorrow I'm not spending all day on dissensus I'm going to skip rope and do press ups and read French theory and write masterpieces and learn about history and meditate

Same - I find that setting artificial boundaries (as in really timetabling) help loads in actually getting that stuff done. I'm *terrible* at it, but I do know when I've managed to achieve it, then it's worked wonders.

i've spent more time on twitter in the past ten days than in the ten previous years

Is there anyone willing to share their quarantine timetable so I can learn from it and be inspired by it? I can't go on like this and maintain my self respect.

I little while back I had this intense fear and stress that really focussed the mind and it was great. I'd smoke a thousand cigarettes and read etc but the more measures that have been put in place the more deflated I've become. Has anyone had a similar experience. The keen edge has been dulled.

I remember when me and gorgeous Jim were staying with Craners we were horrified to learn he puts the news on first thing in the morning. When you are at your most psychically open and vulnerable tipping a load of horror and fear into yourself seems insane. Completely inconceivable.
