I'd like to read Sanctuary which some say is the basis for Balabanov's Cargo 200 (though he claimed it was based on real events).
I hear that one is his pot boiler, self admitted. Ive read sound and fury, Absalom, and go down moses and would highly recommend them all.

I might start it then. Almost done so a few times in the past year but I can sense you getting smarter than me and thats all the motivation I need

Forcing myself through out of spite now - cos you all think I can’t. Imagining you all around me laughing and jeering all “ aye right shiels stop pretending to understand Joyce, stay in your lane” it’s really getting me through

Nope, got a million things, including the Tempest with @catalog. His friendship means far too much to jeopardize.
I've just got to go and pick it up, sometime next week.

My friend at work recommended absalom to me, in fact bought it for me, but I've not read it yet.

I ordered molloy by beckett as well.

In a couple of months we'll all read finnegans wake together.

What he does very well is register the pressure exerted by other people, their sweaty faces pressed against the glass of your self. How much you want to avoid other people, how unpleasant the presence of other people is. How you flinch and sink when an acquaintance spots you in the street, Hullo There! How a group of people box you in and poke you with sticks,

the cramped funeral carriage, thigh to thigh, all the insensitive e things they say, how they deliberately and inadvertently chafe against your sensibilities, too coarse-grained, too clumsy, too cruel.

How they talk too much, in the newspaper office, make too much of their own opinions, stale wind of their own opinions, bloviating, horrible old middle aged men parading their opinions, trialling polished periods, their command of the facts.

Recoiling from the mess of them, eating, animals at the trough, elbows out, how horrible it is to see it, the warmth of them all together like that, belching, sleeve swiped over mouth

How insinuating and devious they are, prying into the hidden corners of your self, probing for weakness, weaselly, wanting to know just what they can get away with, what angle they can work on you, exactly where your soft spots are

Overbearing people, how they suffocate you, big plump rumps planted square on your face, blocking your mouth and nostrils, stately, plump, establishing a tyranny of jovial bumptious hail fellow well met bit back slap enjoying watching you cringe, shrink into yourself, knowing, ha, I've got you now

what it does so well is the horror of other people, how intolerable the presence of other people is, how much we truly hate them.

yes absolutely. And maybe the consensus is that it’s a love letter to Dublin? but there’s plenty of disgust in there, a lot of too much-ness, he leaves it all in

what about @jenks ?
Ulysses or Faulkner? I read Absolom last spring - just brilliant. There is so much of Faulkner:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Faulkner_bibliography
- i've not done the short stories which are supposed to be amazing. Everyone should read S&F and As I Lay Dying as well.
As for Ulysses - I re-read it about four years ago. I much preferred reading it for pleasure compared to when i had to read it as part of my degree (there was a good 25+ yr gap between the two reads as well)

That's how you know it's an authentic love. It's warts and all. It's the city as it is, not as he might like it to be.

I wonder whether I'd feel like Joyce did about Ireland if I ever left England. I can't picture it, but you never know.

Faulkner's stock is very low at the moment lower than ever. He's considered a joke author nowadays.
