just under 100 pages in. Surprised with how readable its been so far, despite being so formally committed to Stephen's diaphane: reality as a sheer tapestry of objects and memory and sensation and etc.

And a very horny book. Authentically horny. Related with what Luka said about how it depicts how disgusting we find the presence of other people. Puts joyces smut letters into perspective

What is a diaphane please?
its what stephen kept repeating on the beach

diaphane
noun
\ " \
plural -s
Definition of diaphane (Entry 2 of 2)
1: a diaphanous substance
2: a complex resinous medium for microscopic mounts having a rather low refractive index and comparatively slight tendency to react with stains

also saw it refer to those 'sheer tapestries' depicting medieval scenes, all the characters a little translucent and ethereal

It's Aristotle again,

37.4 Limits of the diaphane. . . . in bodies: Joyce from the French Aristotle: 'Color is the limit of the diaphane in any determined body' (Aristotle, De Sensu et Sensibilia, III (439bII; Peterson, 214, Aubert, 134). 'Diaphane': the transparent . (See 37.I-2n).

37.7 adiaphane: the non-transparent or opaque.

This 2nd quarter is where you have to grit your teeth and get through. Once you're halfway, youll be in the same rhythm as the book and it's very enjoyable after that.

250ish is Sirens. It's all about the sound of the words. That's why it's got all the weird, twee onomatopoeic phrases and alliteration. It's supposed to be like music.

It's awful
I didn't like that bit too much either. This line's good,

Richie cocked his lips apout. A low incipient note sweet banshee murmured all. A thrush. A throstle. His breath, birdsweet, good teeth he's proud of, fluted with plaintive woe. Is lost. Rich sound. Two notes in one there. Blackbird I heard in the hawthorn valley. Taking my motives he twined and turned them. All most too new call is lost in all. Echo. How sweet the answer. How is that done? All lost now. Mournful he whistled. Fall, surrender, lost.

I really liked the sirens section. Ulysses in general feels like it was written by an insect and I suppose that disarms the twee for me.Though I do have images of a 2020 joyce being very active on reddit, wearing pin stripe vests, watching anime, a 'reply guy' and etc.

I originally put off reading joyce because despite knowing almost nothing about him I had preternatural sense that as a guy he was a total loser and I think I was right.
