The craziest coincidence just happened

I'm in a coffee shop and I listened to a bit of that aftermath tune catalog posted (never heard it before)

Took off my headphones and they're playing it in the fucking coffee shop!

Its a sign!

Tricky live show is also incredible. Seen him a few times and he never fails to impress. He goes somewhere in his performances, often takes a riff and builds it into a terrifying crescendo. I saw him at the barbican in 07 or 8. Skream was supporting, barely noticeable. Then it all goes completely dark and a slightly screwed version of ‘in the air tonight’ by phil c plays. Full tune. Then hes on and gets stuck in, shirt off in the first tune, reaches a high level of intensity and doesnt come down for an hour, body twisting, vocal tics, howls, licking his lips. Like hes fighting, eyes closed most of the time. Absolutely amazing, one of the best shows ive ever seen. I also love how he always has a live band and they key off him. Theres a really good steve mcqueen video called ‘girls tricky’ where it has him recording a few takes and going into the zone and back out again. Its unnerving how much he gives.

Should also mention his a&r role, bringing back mad dog from london posse, guesting on the (brilliant) baby namboos album

I'm confused.

I'm listening to Maxinquaye and it sounds like a Lily Allen/Kate Nash album with edgy beats.

Nah this isn't for me at all. Sounds SO dated.

Does he have better albums than this?

I like Maxinquaye a lot, but its an interesting minor work in the grand scheme of things.

Best later period Goldie is this guy.

Last night I was going to write that you could put him in a lineage that included mike skinner and possibly roots manuva (not that I’ve heard roots manuva).

I couldn’t think of any others, but definitely lily allem. That’s a great comparison

It's blander than The Streets though (The Streets risks - some way say achieves - tastelessness). I prefer Roots Manuva - "Witness" alone is better than this Maxinquaye to my ears.

Maybe it's just how history has fallen out that what once sounded mad sounds quite coffee table now.

Like I associate that sound with this sort of thing (Barty might not know this was used in a Levis advert)

Probably heard this before any tricky or portishead or massive attack, so the dye was cast.

But tbh I've always struggled with massive attack and portishead too. I used to love unfinished sympathy but that was the only one I really liked I think

This is very much in the tricky lineage I guess. I find Roots Manuva a more compelling vocal presence though.

What do you mean, the Ice-T parody?

On a Goldie tip, this CD was the only drum n bass CD my local record shop stocked so it was highly important to me at a certain age. Absolutely abysmal mixing. I remember hearing 'The Hidden Camera' for the first time and jizzing in my spliffy jeans.

Goldie's terrible mixing on this CD set (and on another CD set I had) is almost an art unto itself. It's more interesting than good mixing in a way.
