inject / take away vitality is a bit missing the point though

it's got a sort of entropic power, a will to moulder all solid things

'deconstructed masculinity' indeed. what if masculinity was a rough, badly stitched sack of defenses? why not 'hip hop braggadocio' as a hollow mumble, not even filling it out adequately?

why not a weak angry boy, a helpful inverted succubus to his gf, feeding insistent, exhausted commands but her, 'stifled', 'thinking ahead of him'?

that thing they do, prompting, repeating each others phrases, whisper paralleling song, most thrilling thing in pop for 30yrs. makes me shiver and shake, makes me wanna cry.

a call-and-response pattern confined to the stuffy, consumptive space of self-for-other. finally, we're getting down and dirty in the beyond-fake-real, mirrored abode of intersubjective selfhood.

i tell ya, those two are genius...

cos it's wannabe novel bore shit. im not a huge defender of masculinity but u gotta be cold like a nord. ain't none of that having ur heart broken in third land. ive lost too many friends over the years, some to death and many to us never really jelling in the first place. it's a seductive melancholic illusion. dispell it. i want passion. nothing but passion. I'm never going to pause to comtemplate heartbreak. that's where fascism begins. long live life, not death.

i don't want the real, which is just regular capitalism anyway. I want the ultrareal. visions of possibility. demanding the impossible, shredding the space time fabric.

if i could give a double thank you for that i would

i mean, i guess, if you're not invested in lyrics, like, AT ALL, then perhaps it'll just sound coffee-table

but even on the level of pure delivery, the way he shapes sound out of his mouth, the doubling vocals with Topley-Bird...

I guess weed was still vaguely edgey in 1995. now we're trying to ban it! make lsd class C and make weed class A please!

yall

come on now

it's kind of an unfair question bc Goldie really means Goldie/Rob Playford (or Mark Rutherford, or Pascal, or the 4Hero duo, or etc) but still, Goldie by a million miles

I find Tricky most compelling as the Cappadonna of Massive Attack

In other words, as an extra dimension on someone else's foundation

His own work, I mean...a morass of slow beat mumbling

Lofi hip hop beats to chill to + pre-millenial tension

incidentally pre-millenial tension seems hilariously quaint in retrospect

incidentally Massive Attack is the only good trip hop related music, probably bc they both preceded and hugely transcended it

I was of a certain age (12ish) in the heyday of trip hop and gods it was dire. Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba, etc.

The late 90s was a truly grim period for popular music.

I'd agree there are v interesting things abt Tricky as a person/figure, deconstruction of black/masculinity etc

His music has just dated so incredibly badly

Whereas Goldie's is of its time but also (sorry) timeless

Weird list but what would I choose? I can't think of any British album of the '90s I'd listen to. Chuck it all in the bin.

i was going to mention this in the context of big knob blissblog, but its the same here where they have to divide there listening habits into what they like and the awful stuff they have to pretend to like otherwise they get kicked out of the music journalist club.

simon reynolds has never heard an ariel pink song in his life, but he had to put him on his best of 2005 end of year list under coercion. they told him if he didn't pretend to like lady sovereign the pitchfork goons would come and fire bomb his house.

its a far more sinister industry than people think.

I haven't read thread - busy this week - so idk what all points people made

For me, jungle ca. late 92-mid 95 is still the greatest and most fwd>> (not necessarily or even usually the same thing) pop music ever made

a particular time-place-inspiration confluence of technology, culture, musical evolution, etc given form + purpose by both individual genius and (yes) scenius

and Goldie was deniably at the very forefront of every major development of that, as 4Hero said, Golden Age

Not really (as I understand it) a producer in the way we'd usually understand it, more of an idea-haver/catalyst for others to technically execute, but the two are equally important. Inspiration and execution are inextricable in art, and Goldie was almost definitely jungle's, if not foremost, then quintessential visionary.
