Well this, and plus it draws attention to the fact that there was no good music out of Britain except dance.

Eh sorry to hear that Padraig. That's horrible.

great 'i be realer' patronising claptrap third!

cos that's what yr saying really..

conformist old 'people showing their emotions are weak', dressed up as a load of futurist pabulum, fuck off!

all that aesthetics: faster louder noisier, you're being chased to the increasingly masculinist, affectless margins thinking you've made the big move

in the end, gigantism, monumentalism, fascist aesthetics..

beware of 'visions' that are just capitalist extrapolations, the prolix imagination of the system dreaming its own abstracted continuities, minus pesky real suffering yumans

no heartache with tricky & martina anyway, no feeling as blessedly clearcut as that, it's from inside the suffocated relat, thinking it thru blindly mole-like, feeling only as tangled, sticky headaches

i don't touch zizek, he didn't invent concerns about intersubjectivity obvs

nah, you missed the bit where i posted some rare groove didn't you.

my aesthetics aren't all faster louder harder, albeit a strawman that people resort to when they know I'm right. and who listens to Tricky? left authentocrats. the most capitalistic people of all, wanting to reform the system with some bum fluff like Jeremy Corbyn. give me materialists like Timbo and Missy Elliot every day. capitalism with an open face is better than a humanised middle class capitalism.

the worst product of fascism is anti-fascism. why? Because it posits that democracy and fascism are mutually incompatible, when in reality they go hand in hand, and, after the defeat of the axis, the fascist methods of militarised state control were assimilated into the allied countries. Tricky is far more spectacle than hard acid or whatever, which in any case is music so immediately visceral that it cannot be played in the stadium or on TV with any real resonance. It's physical, tactile and requires one to be submerged in the gyrating acid lines with very close proximity to the speaker. fascists loathe claustrophobia, as it shows their constructions for the hollowness they are. it's much more queer/post-gender as well, unlike tricky who is nothing but straight.

yeah soz about all that. Im not against people showing their emotions. What im saying is far more than that. im saying the real authentic star character is the community of capital, it's fake. the rehearsed vocalisations of soul, the cartoon antics of hardcore-jungle, the disciplined yet screaming atonality of free jazz, the badboy war vibes in 90s dancehall, if viewed using the inverted prism are more real than the notion of real that is sold back to us. music is absolutely theater, because only actors are able to tap into the psychological states necessary to reflect the absurd.

Yeah Jeru is bragadosio. but that's what makes a lot of 90s rap unsettling to many liberals (not you obvs) that it shows blackness as being an all too human notion when the white bohemian invests blackness with something that should speak truth to power always and at all times. It's why I gagged when I read catalog talking about tricky deconstructing black masculinity. ok. and for whom? Masculinity is a choakhold for many racialised populations that cannot just be deconstructed by a solitary artist. Afrofuturism dealt with this question by leaving the soil, which to me is a much more dignified way rather than going back to the atomised couple, for ultimately the boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic in todays western society is just secular marriage without marriage, and hence an impedament to building long lasting bonds of solidarity, eventually going back to the impotent I with all its rotten constructions.

Put it this way: NWA did not kill the real, they were compelled to kill the real.

so put it this way. i infinitely prefer Jeffery era young and future (pre mask off) before it all become Parody to tricky. why? because what YT and Future were doing was a form of digital glosollalia. it was like Cocteau twins, but all the regal stately trappings that Liz Fraser had were (unconsciously might i add) surgically removed. It is precisely more 'actually real' than Tricky in its very plastic fakeness, it's slavish dependence on autotune (more than xanax) to contort language to the level of the infantile spectators that capital has reduced us to. Tricky and Martina give us a glimpse into their personalities, but noone does that today. we are all at any moment surplus, not merely to capital on the immediate level of production but to existence as a whole. the voice is now the voice (both babylike, impotent and totally machinic) not the shout. any attempts at communisation will be a momentous and rapid earthquake, not something felt from deep within the soul. the parable of the righteous attaining heaven is an outdated culturalist illusion. Tricky is too rooted in the personality, but capital had killed that long ago.

K Punk best British albums if the '90s

187 Lockdown – 187 Lockdown
Tricky – Pre Millennium Tension
Goldie – Saturnz Return
Massive Attack – Protection
Breakdown Presents: Drum & Bass Selection 3
Suburban Base and Moving Shadow Present The Joint LP
Various – Techsteppin’
The Dark Side: Hardcore Drum and Bass Style (React)
Marvellous Cain – Gun Talk
World of Twist – Quality Street
Tricky – Maxinquaye
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works
Basement Jaxx – Remedy
MBV – Loveless (also here)
Barry Adamson – Soul Murder
Altern 8 – Full on Mask Hysteria
Renegade Soundwave – Soundclash

that is so characteristically and endearingly Mark, to have the full-lengths by 187 Lockdown, Marvelous Cain, and Altern 8 in his Best British 90s list!

(Also Renegade Soundwave, an absolutely forgotten band but i wouldn't be surprised if an influence on Mark and friends's own group D-Generation)

Mind you, for all I know, the 187 Lockdown album is fantastic, an all-the-way through great listen. Seems pretty unlikely though.

my critique of Mark's way of approaching nuum (Kodwo too) is that they never really fully embrace the scenius concept - their default response is to auteurize, focus on the singular artist and these Grand Works

whereas nothing could be a less effective metric of the contribution of jungle than judging it by the number of great single-artist albums it produced

(rave actually probably produced more enjoyable single-artist albums - see this post in response to another bloggers post on Rave LPs http://energyflashbysimonreynolds.blogspot.com/2018/11/rave-lps.html)

but bringing it back to Tricky - with trip hop, the scenius (such as it is) is the shitstuff, trip hop is really only redeemed as a genre - as a Concept - by Maxinquaye and the first album (maybe bits of the second too) by Massive

Auteurism works there, in part because its audience isn't really a scene i don't think - i guess there must have been trip hop or downtempo clubs - but trip hop pirates?

the trip hop artists would tour, do concerts like rock bands - or rap artists

techno was also pretty senius, even though some of the purists didn't want it to be. you can't halt material developments etc... I mean UR was more like the clan, they had like what, 21 members in 1997?
