Started feeling that fixating on how good the rappers are lyrically or whatever is a mistake here cos it's more about a (frenzied) vibe than anything else

There's clearly a "Voice" or several Voices that everyone's doing. The style is to scream your throat out.

But yeah there are definitely times when I'm thinking hmm is this something unusual and great or just crap

Otoh I get it cos I struggle to keep up myself nowadays

I listened to a tune by one of these drill rappers dissing another one where he's rapping more like the classic New York way over a 50 cent beat and I started listening to his other music and down the rabbit hole I went trying to understand 🤣

Here it is

It might be cringe for me to try and keep up with the times but otoh I would prefer this forum doesn't become 100% threads about Chicago house and such
Yeah, I aspire to keep up myself though I won't 'cos I'm not dedicated enough but I'm sure I'll hear the odd great thing. I listened to most of the Cocaine Blunts top 100 this year and there's no dearth of amazing shit out there.

We probably covered in this thread how uk drill feels a lot more spacious and precise than the ny drill that I've heard
A lot of this stuff is totally jammed with cacophonous sound

Which can be a turn off when you first listen to it

The more I listened to it the more my ears adjusted and I began to just accept that shouty rapping as a given

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I still buy probably a half-dozen new things a month off bandcamp but also admit not having the dedication to explore everything, and sense when a genre is out of reach. Not that it's a bad genre, but that it's just not for me. I applaud threads like this, but I'll never do more than a cursory listen a few times a year to see if there's anything that might catch my ear.

Some of the beats are mental now. I struggle with the lads who have sore throats but the production is worth listening to a lot of the time anyway

I prefer the sample drill side to it personally but thats probably just because its softer to listen to over prolonged period

The deluxe 2 Slizzy 2 Sexy came out recently this is my favourite new york album from this year

I don't disagree exactly but I also feel like matching the energy of the sore throat lads is maybe what's making the beats mental -- or its a symbiotic thing if u smell me
