aren't the middle class exactly the kind of people who are into esoteric spirituality? seances, tarot, etc all kinds of crank beliefs etc. i seem to remember Tooting was a hotbed of witches. middle aged women running around starkers in parks after dark.

perhaps that's not the kind of magic Luke is talking about


i know there's also a sort of aristocratic tradition of dabbling in the occult or not dabbling but pursuing it avidly, buying black arts bibles that cost 1000s pounds, antiquarian wotnot

Bowie is ultra middle class suburban (the male Kate Bush in fact, to reverse the usual cliche) and he fell for every kind of magic, occult, spiritual, mystic thing going. just about the most credulous individual in rock, which is saying something.

or Genesis P. or jonh balance, who went to boarding school.

i would say magic / weirdo religion / new age bollix is precisely the middle class way - or one of them, anyway - of a/ filling the hole in their souls and the great emptiness of suburban existence and b/ evading their duty to side with the proletariat and hasten the revolution
