Also funny luka should mention Gummo in the other thread. The trailer's better than the film and makes great use of Like a Prayer.

it's too bad luke voted too quick

if he'd voted Madonna this would be lining up as the same standard coalitions

me/John/Droid vs Luka/Version and presumably Corpsey and Barty

third wild carding for Madge

holy shit that is terrible

the classical guitar really just takes it over edge for me

truly dystopian music

yeah, and that's where Kate Bush doesn't succeed. you either get it or you don't. and to get it you need to be inured to her 60s-70s patrician English upbringing. something i have no connection with, my parents coming to this country after the 1980 military coup. Madonna can be reversed enjoyed as absolutely terrible to remind you of your ideological value set.

I could hardly not vote Kate bush when last night I got shitfaced and started a thread about how I was going to marry her

madonna has a cross gender teenage sex appeal that Kate Bush doesn't, however much as grown adults we might find that playing into patriarchal notions of femininity, it's there and its irresistable. she makes no secret of being anything but a conformist. there is nothing avant in madonna and there is no pretension at that. she does not pretend to be artistic and cultured and nuanced.

it's not even avant in the timbaland sense. it's just aping the US post-disco/boogie/electrosoul coming out at the time. but again we're not talking about a niche concern like Factrix or John Coltrane. and it must be judged relative to the standards it wants to operate on.

my defence of Madonna is an indictment of the pop music market though. whereas defending Kate Bush signals that it can be made something better, more cultured and more tasteful. I see pop music as toxic and madonna herself is nothing but toxic.

I've never liked art into pop. I've always prefered pop into art. contort it, mutate it, fuck it up.

hardcore and garage are the only genres that were able to do this successfully though. deconstructed club and all that conceptronica was just a return to artpop. burn it all down down down down.

i thought you ended up divorcing her after the 'incident'?

They're both great, but obviously it's Kate Bush, because it's like comparing Haagen Dazs to manna from heaven.

My first encounter with Kate was courtesy of Children's BBC, and it blew my young mind. Not sure I found out it was her singing until quite a few years later tho:

The thing that's blowing my mind is that there are Dissensians who don't know La Isla Bonita and Lucky Star. The answer to Barty's thread of yesterday is clearly 80s Madonna.

:crylarf:

I'll her next time I see her.

im not even joking. if you want actual art rock you should probably listen to henry cow. it's much more its own language. Kate is just stuck in this perpetual limbo where she appeals to critics who are to afraid to admit that yes, actually, they like some prog.

Can the same criticism some made of MJ be made of Madonna? She's kind of formless underneath all the costumes and scandal.

she's an insane narcissist who is using fame and pop music to address childhood trauma, so I think in that they're kinda similar. but yeah, dressing (you) up to deflect from the inner world

dagmar krauze can actually make cabaret sound wacky and freaky, in a good way that isn't just mere cringe.
