So one set of polarities, as you say, is performance vs truth. Kurt Cobain being felt to correct for Axl Rose.

One overarching theme in the first half of the '90s is the quest for the real. Grunge. But also in hip-hop. Where Wu-Tang invoke dirt and griminess. Keeping it real.

Then in the second half of the decade there's a renewed desire to be fabulous.

And ardkore pulling in the opposite direction - for a while at least - taking refuge in the unreal and utopian. I thought it was quite a good cultural balance.

Yeah. There's always contradictory currents. I was unhappy with that formulation. It was a thing. But not the only thing

This continued of course into the 2000's with schism between sampling and non-sampling based productions. Sampling being real hip hop, I guess because it was about organic sounds and keeping the funk and swing of the source material alive, but still ironic.

People clinging on to 90s earnestness in the decaying cadavres of DJ Premier and Pete Rock puzzled by Lil Wayne's popularity. Banners in the youtube uploads saying "real hip hop is not on the radio". Kanye jumping ship.
