'revolution could be subverted permanently by infiltrating the underground and subsidizing it. In this way the thinking of the opposition could be known as it developed and fatally compromised. Corporate, government, and foundation cash grants to subversives might be one way to derail the train of insurrection that Hegelian theory predicted would arise against every ruling class.'

- ol' J P Morgan.

A while back version posted a link to an article about Surkov from 2011. I'd read it before around the time Hypernormalisation came out, but one thing I'd totally forgotten about is a small comment about Surkov writing lyrics for rock n roll bands, and having a photo of Tupac on his desk.

Apparently the guy who wrote that article - Pomerantsev - also wrote a pretty good book:

Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible: The Surreal Heart of the New Russia

In the new Russia, even dictatorship is a reality show.

Professional killers with the souls of artists, would-be theater directors turned Kremlin puppet-masters, suicidal supermodels, Hell’s Angels who hallucinate themselves as holy warriors, and oligarch revolutionaries: welcome to the glittering, surreal heart of twenty-first-century Russia. It is a world erupting with new money and new power, changing so fast it breaks all sense of reality, home to a form of dictatorship—far subtler than twentieth-century strains—that is rapidly rising to challenge the West.

When British producer Peter Pomerantsev plunges into the booming Russian TV industry, he gains access to every nook and corrupt cranny of the country. He is brought to smoky rooms for meetings with propaganda gurus running the nerve-center of the Russian media machine, and visits Siberian mafia-towns and the salons of the international super-rich in London and the US. As the Putin regime becomes more aggressive, Pomerantsev finds himself drawn further into the system.

i read that book, about half of it, he's a terrible writer in long form unfortunately - it all gets very repetitive and boring. i would like to get hold of the actual russian novel written by the guy he's on about, but i don't think it's been translated.

Choice architecture is the design of different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers, and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision-making. For example, each of the following:

  • the number of choices presented[1]
  • the manner in which attributes are described[2]
  • the presence of a "default"[3][4]

can influence consumer choice. As a result, advocates of libertarian paternalism and asymmetric paternalism have endorsed the deliberate design of choice architecture to nudge consumers toward personally and socially desirable behaviors like saving for retirement, choosing healthier foods, or registering as an organ donor. These interventions are often justified[by whom?] in that well-designed choice architectures can compensate for irrational decision-making biases to improve consumer welfare.[5] These techniques have consequently become popular among policymakers, leading to the formation of the UK's Behavioural Insights Team and the White House "Nudge Unit" for example.[6] While many behavioral scientists stress that there is no neutral choice-architecture and that consumers maintain autonomy and freedom of choice despite manipulations of choice architecture,[7] critics of libertarian paternalism often argue that choice architectures designed to overcome irrational decision biases may impose costs on rational agents, for example by limiting choice[8] or undermining respect for individual human agency and moral autonomy.[9]

A new form of “influence government”, which uses sensitive personal data to craft campaigns aimed at altering behaviour has been “supercharged” by the rise of big tech firms, researchers have warned.

National and local governments have turned to targeted advertisements on search engines and social media platforms to try to “nudge” the behaviour of the country at large, the academics found.

The shift to this new brand of governance stems from a marriage between the introduction of nudge theory in policymaking and an online advertising infrastructure that provides unforeseen opportunities to run behavioural adjustment campaigns.

Not exactly an exact science is it? From that same article:
One set of anti-knife crime adverts, for instance, was targeted at fans of drill music on YouTube. The researchers warn that being followed around the internet by mentions of knife crime could make young people more likely to think that knife-carrying was common, ultimately helping convince them to carry a weapon.

Lately I've been considering an occupation in the US intelligence community, perhaps working toward a hyperstition bureau or some such. Expect this forum to be heavily monitored, assuming it isn't already.

And I've been considering what avenues there are for transparent social engineering. Might be a pipe dream, but I generally believe there are always potential vectors for breakthrough.

Consensual psychological operations, ideology harmonization programs, things to address outstanding feelings of alienation and psychic isolation.

Preferably under the banners of multipolar liberal democracy and triple-bottom-line capitalism.

get all jittery approaching gwasanaethau?

the 20-something me would be with you - pointless, complicating, doesn’t put food on the table, ultimately futile

the 40-something me sees it as the worst of both worlds - language engagement as obligatory dictum rather than through choice, exclusionary, preachy, political correctness on steroids

the point to remember is it wasn’t the language’s fault that Welsh-Not was endemic and corrosively enacted, if you grew up around gog relatives who were cymru-cymraeg the Welsh language was a bridge not a divide

one of the things which has happened, or at least i think it's fairly new, is that everyone just assumes that the media is the official mouthpiece of The Illuminati, not just of the state but of the Globalist Cabal.

Her following tweet's spot on too,

everything's just a wacko conspiracy theory until it happens, then it has always been 'inevitable' and you just get this grating smug gawker-toned bullshit about "what, did you expect something else sweetie? feeling a little disappointed rn? need your diaper changed?"
