why is it hotter at night. the sun isn't even around. it was fine in here till about 8pm.

the land retains the sun's heat beyond the exposure to the sun. i remember doing this in geography gcse. water retains the heat even more, which gives rise to a phenomenon known as contintality where islands are hotter than nearby mainland, cos they get more heat from the water.

If you've read The Third Policeman, you'll know that de Selby proved beyond all doubt that night isn't caused by the relative movement of the earth and sun, but by the periodic accumulation and dispersion of industrial pollution, which blocks out the sun's visible rays but also traps the infrared rays more effectively. Hence it's dark, but also warmer, at night.
