Many rural women became property themselves, as William Hogarth showed in his dismal series of engravings, A Harlot’s Progress. Some were employed to stand in the doorways of “crimping houses,” where they would lure men into a flirtatious drinking game, after which the naïve victims would awake on a ship to the Caribbean. During the eighteenth century, perhaps a quarter of a million British men were forcibly sent overseas to serve the cause of property

Any significant connections made between popular shooter video game developers and military actors? Seems like a mutually lucrative partnership.

Had another thought about neoliberalism, and about the willful rearrangement of personal values - the kind of steering that could be considered post-ideological.

Regarding neoliberalism, I was thinking about the fusion of work and play which is largely correlated with technological development. And naturally I immediately wonder what the extremity of this process would be like, and if one could somehow hasten their progression through this development.

This kind of hastening would be a strategic and constant rearrangement of personal values - which wouldn't just be ideological, but also passionate, visceral, pre-articulate, etc.

This kind of development may, at least in part, be susceptible to increasingly accurate manipulations imposed by the will. I thought of it as a repositioning of this and that phobia and philia, positive and negative feedback, forward and backward thrusters on the spherical probe - which does a hell of a lot more than merely move in the average direction. The average direction is the maximal feedback that can be received from the order of magnitude inhabited by the thrusters, a shadow cast by a higher dimensional object.

And this strategic and somewhat algorithmic repositioning and redefining of phobia and philia can conceptually enter the territory of schizo this and that.

Anyway, as this relates to neoliberalism, I thought a hastening through of the development that is the fusion of work and play - such a hastening could be considered as a cultivation of phobias, one for work that isn't fun, and one for play that isn't productive. Conversely, a philia would be established for a productive and holistically satisfying playful work.

The extremity of the generic phobia is guttural and psychosomatic, and a tolerance up to such a point may be necessary.

In a way, I am currently undergoing a sort of phobic lighting of bureaucracy, it being a sort of higher order apparatus that is, itself, midway through a fusion of fun and work - a higher analog of us, in that way. That is, I am becoming averted to it. I think its helpful to consider phobia in its psychical and physical senses - the former involving fear and the latter involving either a repulsion or an unbreachable division. Like certain membranes are hydrophobic if they don't let certain molecular objects pass through them.

A becoming-neoliberal would culminate in a total fusion of work and play. On a higher order, societal scale, this would be a gradual competitive deprivileging (a redefinition of success parameters away from:) those who are not able to reconcile work with play. To some degree. The optimal itself shifts.

Edit: such a culmination would be a sort hyperlibidinal productivity. Play, alone, being a sort of expression or discharge of libidinal potential (?), and work, alone, being a sort of taking-pains at the cost of playtime.

Arguably the reason the two are fusing on the larger competitive scale, is because it is a win-win, an optimization in the terms of both work and play.

I used to be really awful at writing. And I'm not great now, but there was a point where it was inexcusably bad. I went looking for pointers during a professor's office hours and she ended up staying an hour after her time to absolutely grill me. Stringently cross examining the thought process behind my wording of every clause, sentence after sentence. brutal. back at my dorm I reread every essay I had written for the class, their true nature revealed to me now for the first time, and felt like dying. It was an instant change. one of the few good university moments.

not saying constant is bad though, only encouraging him to accept the tutelage for its transformative potential

Yeah I totally agree its far from optimal, relative to even a reasonable benchmark. Far more focused on extensive than intensive, erring on the side of the former. Phobic to pouring down into a given intensity, perhaps. Anyway I agree - it can be so much better, and I suspect I have a substantial amount to learn from several other Dissensians.

And @Linebaugh my only moment in college similar to that was much shorter. A professor, whom I chose to meet after class, making me read aloud the information sheet for the essay which I misinterpreted. I can only begin to appreciate the constructive potential of such experiences.

@thirdform called it scattershot a while back, and as usual he was on point. Only then, and still now, I will defend the schizo and unfocused sensibility to some extent - not to invalidate the criticism offered.

Might need to dial up the neoliberalism in this forum (edit: that is, after having cried wolf against it for a while). Same reason I voted for Biden/Harris - to hasten round the bend and back on track, onward. Not every higher stage is a (gross) better stage than the prior - its only in hindsight that each stage bears witness to this or that teleology.

The Morrison government’s proposed Surveillance Bill could be used to target everyone from Black Lives Matter campaigners to underage kids illegally downloading movies, critics have warned.

Is there an age above which it's legal to illegally download movies?

forcing people to see work as play is obviously both absurd and deeply dystopian

it's not enough to perform your job, you're now mandated to enjoy your job or face a competitive disadvantage from the work-play thought police

tho even the most hardline of neoliberals wouldn't dream of the level of social control needed to enforce such a thing

no, for that you need to apply some half-baked Deleuze

this is also how ppl wind up using Deleuze as justification for investment banking or urban warfare in the Gaza Strip

I have to ask stan, do you, no offense, actually know neoliberalism is?

the actual school of thought I mean - Hayek, Mont Pelerin Society, Chicago School, etc - not this amorphous, boundless concept way you seem to apply it

it's a word that people tend to invoke without actually knowing what it means
