My wife's become a swivel-eyed anti-vaxxer lately. I think it's because they're coming for the kids with the clotshot. Anyway, she's started looking for boltholes, but is there anywhere left to escape the Coming Authoritarianism? I suggested some mountains in northern Laos or Burma, the Zomia plateau outlined in The Art of Not Being Governed, but she wants somewhere with a pool and no tropical diseases.

I wouldn't mind that. I have a recurring vision of myself sitting in a dusty, leaf-strewn walled garden amid tamarisk and persimmon trees, gazing at distant peaks while counting off returning yak on my worry beads. Here I am.
