Sainsbury's - and no doubt many others - do that thing where they pay people the bare minimum then top it up with a staff discount to encourage them to put what little they do earn straight back into the company.

a bit like that thing that's started popping up where they ask you if you'd like to round up to the nearest pound as a charitable donation. some let you choose the charity, some don't

Just imagine what it'll be like when we are able to administer micro shocks to some portion of the nervous system to condition us not to spend past x minutes daily on this or that app. That is how the attention of the consumer-subject could be partitioned out and maximized, finessed, rather than just letting their attention wander. We would be tightening the technical reins we steer ourselves with.

You could micro-shock yourself into becoming a more organized and regimented personality, a more optimal neoliberal subject. A deeper subordination of nature, of base instinct. A, perhaps, perennial trauma. But its either that or you lose the race.

But perhaps it will come at some increasingly visceral cost. Similar to how so many of us are in work/pseudo-work mode at all hours of the day, largely because the benchmark was upped by those of us who pushed it, and those of us who reacted positively to such pushing.

(edit: "pushed" by those who were initially willing to spend more of their free time going over emails and whatnot, perhaps back when it wasn't some de facto requirement to more or less constantly be going over emails.)

Might not be felt as optimization to us, but perhaps our feelings aren't tuned to what is being optimized.

And to be clear, I don't think that-which-is-being-optimized is necessarily willfully optimizing itself, or even necessarily being willfully optimized by something else.

edit: that is, the kind of optimization I have in mind is the kind that remains after the silt has been sifted, the almost inevitable result of certain feedback processes. Seemingly, certain feedback processes function to gravitate around whatever kind of equilibrium/equilibria at work within the system-of-relations. This is largely irrespective of the wills and intentions of the agents involved, but I do think there is a correlation, and that the wills and intentions are not random.

"What he did want now, and very badly, was food. He touched his credit chip through the denim of his jeans. He'd go across the street and get a sandwich ... Then he remembered why he was here, and suddenly it didn't seem very smart to use his chip. If he'd been sussed, after his attempted run, they'd have his chip number by now; using it would spotlight him for anyone tracking him in cyberspace, pick him out in the Barrytown grid like a highway flare in a dark football stadium. He had his cash money, but you couldn't pay for food with that. It wasn't actually illegal to have the stuff, it was just that nobody ever did anything legitimate with it."

Funny, cause even if we were to actively resist optimization, we would only be better defining and reifying the optimal. Because resistance, here, would require one to have identified whatever individuation vectors are intersubjectively deemed optimal.

I've noticed card machines in petrol stations rather impertinently asking ADD 25P FOR CHARITY? [Y/N]. It doesn't tell you what charity. Fuck that! It could for hard-up stockbrokers who don't know where their next lapdance is coming from, for all I know.
