@sufi I was. They played it as a lead in to the point that the police had spied on school children who were campaigning against the NF.

The Mark Kennedy case never ceases to grate

The filth find this amoral, limp-wristed, dead-souled cunt and offer him a cushy life for 3-4 years, snooping on Nottingham crusties. He sells small chunks of illicit compounds, fucks his way through the female rank and file, before coming clean and writing a book. Very very brave work, Mark, very very helpful for society you boss-eyed cunt

Not only were these protests at the most benign end of local environmental concerns, it begs the question what happens when the supposed threat is perceived as more immediate. @sufi piggybacking on deceased I.d’s was a big draw infiltrating republican groups during The Troubles - permission is a legal loophole easily exploited by the unscrupulous, always was always will be

[Walter] Benjamin suggests that fascistic governments aim to maintain the status quo by providing citizens with the means to express themselves aesthetically without reforming their lives materially. Thus the aforementioned government that Brandon thinks TikTokers have scared shitless actually, as Benjamin writes, “sees its salvation in granting expression to the masses—but on no account granting them rights.” More to the point, any countercultural voltage these influencers purport to possess gets nullified by the fact that they have clear incentives not to talk about controversial matters, lest they get dropped by their brands. “I don’t talk about politics at all,” Brandon says. “It’s like there’s always another opinion. It’s always better to be neutral. I feel like everybody avoids politics on social media. Besides that, though, everyone feels like they have a voice.”

Otago and UK researchers have developed a world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic: an intra-oral device that restricts a person to a liquid diet.

To clarify, the intention of the device is not intended as a quick or long-term weight-loss tool; rather it is aimed to assist people who need to undergo surgery and who cannot have the surgery until they have lost weight.

After two or three weeks they can have the magnets disengaged and device removed. They could then have a period with a less restricted diet and then go back into treatment. This would allow for a phased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician.

In case you all missed it, it's now illegal to protest "noisily", and to help asylum seekers enter the UK, even if you don't make any financial gain from it.

When did we start collectively thinking about governed life in terms of "the system"? Could it have caught on as information technology took off? An inability to comprehend the intricate patterns of that with which you interact, and a paranoia about how it may be used against you?

Weren't counterculture people talking about "the system" in the 60s? If not the Beats even earlier?

Beats could be among the ground zeros, and I think the counterculture [youth] were among the first generations to have some existential familiarity with telecommunication networks/"systems". Pretty sure most of that started with WWII, Harvard Radio Labs, etc.

I think there may be something psychologically pivotal about it. Like the Big Other going cybernetic and not being fully recognizable as human, to channel Nick Land.

Arguably it sets the stage, in terms of mass alienation, for someone to come along and galvanize some kind of anti-system populism. It's all corrupt, etc. The renunciation of logic itself as being the language of the system.

They weren't something ordinary people used or (probably) were even aware of, but under-ocean and transcontinental telegraph cables synchronized the world's commodity markets in the 19th century. There's a book about this, although I haven't read it.

Probably a pretty obvious statement but the concept of today's overarching system and the historic "man" stepping on the freedoms of the beat generation are pretty different

Today's system is really a byproduct of a totally consuming all-pervasive broadband economy that most of us have opted into willingly and allowed ourselves to become products of.

For all the talk of government authoritarianism it is just catching up to the tech monopoly's stranglehold over your head by virtue of the bullshit on your phone/tablet etc

the bitcoin/crypto economy is a clear indicator of this- and I say this as someone with a portfolio of stagnant "coins"- as there is a conceptual freedom somehow attached to it, as if it will provide respite from the banking system amid societal collapse. Really what we are doing is embracing digital dystopia with open arms and assuming the benevolent Internet will somehow redeem us

Can talk about the government suppressing freedoms, and it's certainly the case in the UK, but AI algorithms are doing this on a far more invasive way every moment of the day. If your phone is an extension of your brain now, and for most of us it is, then why do we allow a shitty robot to control big portions of it

At least with governance you can conceptually see a possibility of change, and theoretically have a day in the matter. Pretty unlikely in a semi-fascist state like this but in theory its possible if democracy worked

But the always-on system is all seeing and to what end.

this is very good and very true but i dont personally beleive there is a huge distinction between government and tech monopoly to be made and tech monopoly is an arm of empire imo not to say there arent tensions and contradictions built into that
