After a Decade Without Executions, South Carolina’s Solution: Bring Out the Firing Squad

Frustrated by the lack of drugs available to carry out lethal injections in their state, South Carolina lawmakers are on the cusp of a controversial solution: forcing death row inmates to face the electric chair or firing squad when lethal injection is not possible.

Internationally, the use of firing squads is uncommon. In the United Arab Emirates, a convicted murderer was executed by firing squad in 2014. Defectors from North Korea have reported on the use of firing squads for a range of offenses. China used firing squads for many years but more recently has relied on lethal injection.

Roughly 600-800 vehicles allegedly caused street-racing gridlock on I-225, Aurora police say

Roughly 600-800 vehicles were allegedly involved in a street-racing gridlock between Colfax and Alameda avenues along southbound Interstate 225 Sunday night, according to a tweet from Aurora police. The highway has since been cleared. Several of the vehicles were “intentionally blocking the shoulders” of the highway in order to prevent police from reaching the area, according to Aurora police.

“There are reports of fireworks and smoke and weapons being waved,” the tweet reads.

I used to throw a good two-seam fastball, looked like it was going straight over the plate and then would rise up and in to a right handed batter, brushing him back off the plate. never good at curves or sliders, but did manage a decent forkball after awhile: it would come straight in then drop. a good one was described as a ball the fell off a table.

shock and awe from the Portuguese Exocet. i love throwing but hate cricket. there should be a throwing range of games in the Olympics imho, humans have evolved to do it, why not treat it like archery or something similar

what's with the pitcher's mound btw, why is it elevated? to give downward force as you accelerate down and through it? i find the strike zone a bit arbitrary, it's displayed now. never asked about the mound before - the ball flight graphic triggered it

always with the questions

have no idea why the pitcher's mound is raised, it just always has been. (actually, here's more than we ever need to know).

the strike zone is the width of home plate and the vertical distance between the batter's knees and just below their shoulders. but balls and strikes are called by the umpire, which then brings in the element of human judgment and error, which is part of the game. a number of years back, TV broadcasts started to show the outline of the strike zone box, which made the occasional bad call all the more evident. but the umpire's ruling on balls and strikes stand, there is no replay to potentially overturn call (as there is in calling a base runners safe or out, or a hit ball fair or foul).

when you grow up with baseball, it's really easy to understand. but to someone who didn't, it's weird and confusing as hell. Which is how I feel about cricket.

Well the stumps in cricket provide an objective measure of if the ball hit em... but with LBW there is a hunan element of judgement.

Will never get over the weirdness of baseball. It's like an extremely complex game of chance.
