Speaking of children of dance. There was this guy who I worked with at Borders and one day he told us that this parents were these shit hot ballet dancers, in fact at one point his dad was tipped to become the new Nureyev or something but sadly he was in a car crash which basically prevented him from being a professional and both parents ultimately ended up being ballet teachers.
What was interesting was it turned out that just before he had this accident some mega-famous choreographer (you can see I really know my stuff here) had created a dance just for his dad - well, I think it was a two man piece but he wrote it because he wanted his dad to perform it. If I remember correctly, my friend had known about this but what he didn't know was that his dad had actually danced it once and it had been filmed. And basically he tracked down a copy... it turned out the BFI had one in their vaults and he wrote to them asking to watch it. Very reasonably and in a not at all jobsworthy manner they refused and told him to fuck off... but he persisted until eventually they agreed to lend him a disc of his scratchy black and white footage of his dad performing from like thirty five years ago as long as he returned it within four days and under no circumstances let anyone else see even the disc and didn't copy it under pain of death.
Obviously he made loads of copies and showed it to us and... well, it was kinda weird and avant-garde and reminded me of some Merce Cunningham stuff I'd seen at the Barbican or whatever, although my friend assured me that it was actually ballet rather than contemporary dance and those two things are completely and utterly different and his parents would have got really annoyed with anyone who mixed them up.
But, yeah, I thought it was quite an interesting story (albeit without any particular ending or anything) - I was particularly fascinated by the cuntiness of the BFI - and it sort of fits here and maybe some of you lot will find it interesting too. I hope so anyway.

I showed a Colombian a video of people Morris Dancing the other day, I thought she'd find it funny, she just looked confused and disappointed.. "Whats going on, they're not dancing?".

There was a morris dancing group in my village, I think it's more about real ale to be honest, also maypole and we did country dancing at primary school.

i spent my saturday night watching dance videos on youtube and drinking wine, realizing that since clubs have closed i haven't been dancing. and thinking what that means and if it could be one of many reasons why the city seems to be so particularly grumpy. me and my friend ended up dancing to some fast paced chicago ghetto tech mix.

here's some video's i liked:

that 1920s dance craze video thought me that my idea of the 20's was completely false. i thought everything was slow back then. i thought cars were slow, i thought music was slow, i thought dancing was slow. but the footwork is just as fast paced as we have now. i have no idea why i had this image in my mind.

I was thinking last night about how I never really liked juke footworking, I liked the music but really didn't like the dancing, not something I would ever admit at the time but I'm going to say it now. It's not actually in time with the music, I think that should be an important part of dancing, and it looks weird.
