Cringeworthy

Lees began to feel a knock-on effect on his health. “Human brains really aren’t designed to be interacting with hundreds of people every day,” he says. “When you’ve got thousands of people giving you direct feedback on your work, you really get the sense that something in your mind just snaps. We just aren’t built to handle empathy and sympathy on that scale.” Lees developed a thyroid problem, and began to experience more frequent and persistent stretches of depression. “What started out as being the most fun job imaginable quickly slid into something that felt deeply bleak and lonely,” he says.

It alters the brain chemistry over time. You might think you have to operate on a higher level, more switched on, fully tuned but I think to speak to large audiences effectively a repression has to take place, you kill off and sideline a bit of yourself and over time it takes its toll

True. Which probably helped implant the concept at the forefront of everybody's mind. Is that part of the reason patty thinks the office is worse than AIDS?

yes, exactly. it marked and encapsulated a big change for the worse. imo

Darned cockwombles.
Shame is a key method of social control, possibly the main one, particularly in the kind of image and 'reputation' focused society we live in. It is also no coincidence that the most shameless people frequently rise to the top in both politics and business - they simply don't care if they're found out to be lying or suspected of whatever indiscretion, narcissism overrides the shame response. Which is usually an indicator of a 'personality disorder', where deep wells of shame exist, but are so deeply buried in one part of the psyche that they can seem simply not to be there. Trump and Johnson obviously ideal examples, Priti Patel too

i think i personally have to do it in some kind of voice just becasue words written on paper are generally meant to be enunicated correctly which entails putting on a different voice from my usual speaking voice and if im doing that anyway might as well invent a whole new character, or you draw out the character implicit on the page

I matched with this girl on a dating app - I stalked online and found her profile - she was reading her stories aloud. I was repulsed. Am i immature and intolerant?

It’s obv different when you memorise, write lyrics etc. But there’s the awkward script, the velocity switch between unpracticed written word and speech

I don't like cringe. It gets used as social policing. Yes I understand the appeal, yes I agree many things are cringe. It just so often gets used as a normie reaction to weirdness. "I can't explain the problem with your behavior but it's weird." OK.

Of course: Don’t think it can be separated into like & dislike neatly. there’s pleasure in identifying what’s embarrassing and distancing yourself, that’s not me. There’s pain in empathising with the act and the mortification, and again thank fuck that’s not me / I don’t think like they do. Thank fuck I’m sophisticated

Did you hear your voice on a recording and shrug? Some people don’t like the sound of their voice replayed, or is it an intrusion of peace and calm/silence

If more story tellers from Belfast did audio books the sales would bitcoin
