cheers barty, i guess here is as good a public place as any to say sorry and no hard feelings. sorry for being harsh earlier. obv things are a little crazy for us all and this place should be a refuge from the mess going on outside. i guess we got a little covid fuelled cabin fever, as HMGovt rightly put it. i'd really like for everyone to get along. and i mean everyone. (even people who might have me blocked.) this whole thing has been pretty tragic tbh. i really don't enjoy fighting. i hate it. but sometimes there comes a point. anyway, i just hope we can get back somewhere near baseline at some point in the not so distant future. ❌

10 points to anyone who can tell me what classic track this one is a tribute to. it's all in the riff

clue: there's a distant connection to a well known dissensian

Could post these tracks all day. You really hear the nuances of drum programming with peak-era NJ gear. Guidance's releases capture different emphases again style-wise & their label's graphics cue a flashback rush too.

Seeing Callisto/DK linked here is heart-warming. He nailed swirling, ethereal soundscapes with the most hypnotic, trance (with a small-t) inducing beats. High up in the list of buy on sight productions.

Suppose what i'm trying to articulate is that, given how played out 4/4 can be, how utterly mind-numbing this template can devolve into in the wrong hands, in various locations around the world genuine magic was created that still sounds spellbinding & immersive. Maybe the intensity &/or volume of quality releases has waned, but i'm still finding old gems 32+ years since radicalisation.

i feel like NJ, and particularly tony humphries at zanzibar must have been something special.

Sorted but not like Leah Betts! Nearly said Mike Huckaby, but couldn't find the track that riffed similarly.

Fun vid (Tonka were quality for a brief few years, wasn't expecting that, don't know if there are any ex-Zap regulars here). An ex during uni was from Camden in south Philly & used to make the Zanzibar pilgrimage 90-92. Met her @Venus & got tape swapping, Hot97 bits, Weatherall @Flying, between trying to pull. If i had some of those tapes today eh, but they rarely survive. Youtube has some solid Humphries mixes from this period though.

In the meantime, take your Moonchildren & raise you:

way before my time, first clubbing proper for me was post millenium. medicine bar, custard factory, birmingham. not too shabby, but def nothing like a proper munted up tonka rave ending up on the beach in the morning sun. def born in the wrong decade.

been listening to a bunch of humphries mixes at work recently before the lockdown. he hits the spot. need to dig out the hot97 ones.

chris gray is quite the producer eh?

not quite brighton, but here's a little bit of southern english deep biznizz from Mr Tea's neck of the woods
