Absolutely flawless

Sad to have just seen that Nashem Wooden from this group has died of corona.

What a track this is, remember playing it on a Now compilation at one of the first parties I went to as a 13 year old

Thanks, that’s exactly what I hate about it. The packaged up you’re about to have a good timeness.

I'd go as far as to say that music that's consciously and specifically about "having a good time" is almost invariably terrible. The "rock" equivalent (if you can call it that) is that bloody awful Toploader song.

I don't agree. I think Shiels is right. It's generational. It's about this point in the timeline and what good times have come to signify. 'Good times' are nihilistic now in a way they weren't before.

I don't think that house tune shiels posted is "nihilistic", though. It's not that interesting. It's just extremely bland.

I think it's the soundtrack to a really good time. A marker of the last time it was possible to be happy and enjoy yourself. Walk around with a smile on your face, hello sun! Hello cloud! Hello mossy rock!

Being serious he's in the top 100 definitely. But well below RZA or Timblaland for instance. He's never made anything as indelible as Roll the Beats or Desire.

I beg to differ there, chief

Him as a whole package is unmatched. The breadth of the catalog. All the styles. The mastery of each one. Even taking some past their logical conclusion. The influence he's had on so many other far flung genres. The marketing. The visual side. The myth making. The lying. The interviews. And the fact that he's able to bring out pretty much every shade of emotion at high intensity without ever getting too wet or too dry. Unmatched man. You don't get the same level of nerdery in the fans (not that I think it's cool, it's just indicative of the effect he has on people) with anyone else. He was ahead of his time so many times. And all with a sense of humour. Hes our Miles, our Mozart.

It's his distinct sense of melody that I love. He trusts his own weirdness and is goofy with the virtuosity. He as the ability to make robotic funky stuff on a timbaland level if he could just settle on one idea too, but he's too fussy.

The bit from around 3.40 here springs to mind. analord and the tus stuff had so much funk to it, but so changeable and awkward

So much of what I've heard of his has been inessential. Noodly.

He's a genius of course but I don't think of him in terms of 'breadth' but narrowness.

He did pummelling techno in the very early 90s that can still rip your scalp off nearly 30 years later; electro funk that would blend in with the classics of that genre; jungle and choppage like it's no big deal; ambient that remains some of the most lauded; pop pastiche which managed to slip through the net, and then all the other shit. That's what I call breadth.

Did you see him at printworks patty? I liked the sensory assault but the pummeling techno and breakcore bits I get bored by, I don't find it that intense after 30 seconds. I want loads of space and lush melodies and crying synths not drumworkouts for crusties. Best bit was when he dropped it out all for stone in focus and then brought is dj ss black

He never made a jungle tune like its no big deal! I like Aphex but I won't stand for this revisionism and fake news!

it's the contrast between breakcore and stone in focus and then black all as a sequence is what i love about him. it's like you need to get scrambled to really appreciate those chords which bring you back down to the warm embrace of earth and then just rip it all apart again with black. the framing and juxtaopsition. cerebral.
