Stray thoughts under partial quarantine

Worked across Virginia - Richmond, Culpeper, Roanoke but mostly trawled along I-95

Weird state. Shenandoah is incredible, Alexandria up to DC along the Potomac a tad creepy. David Lynch lived around there (Arlington?). So much Civil War history state-wide

"Stay safe" has been dropped has it? And nothing's really replaced it.

And no one cares.

Connect with the end of Dominic Cummings.

story in the NY Times about how a survey found people gained nearly 2 pounds per month during lockdown/quarantine, not unusual to find folks 20 pounds heavier than a year ago. might not be 100% accurate, since it was a small sample size, but still.

i'm definitely fatter than i was one year ago. combo of lots of days with no steps at all plus more comfort eating i suppose. it's not out of control but some of my shirts and trousers are tight. need to sort it out really, inshallah summer will be the time.

I am in my best shape since first year university after using all my dieting strategies concurrently:
- low carb meals
- calorie cut
- no snacking
- v few sugary things
- early to bed
- walking a great deal
- multivitamins

By 'best shape' I mean on the surface; I've probably done myself all kinds of internal damage through these strict modifications.

Apparently you're supposed to ask your doctor about any imminent dieting, especially something involving cutting calories drastically.

I can't be bothered to do that.

same here, I'm actually down about eight pounds from pre-COVID, from rowing 4-5 times per week, 30-60 minutes per session, and eating almost exclusively veg (since the pescatarian wife does the cooking). that's also counteracted a beer/glass of wine or two 3-4 nights a week. we don't count calories, and luckily we don't have a sweet tooth.

I'll continue rowing when things get back to normal (OR WILL THEY???!!!), but will also indulge again with the occasional greasy cheeseburger and fries, fried chicken, etc.

that's interesting. my wife calorie counts, but i could never be bothered with it. but she has lost loads of weight. i just need to force myself to do more walking or get a rowing machine like leo.

Second-year university was when they decided to charge meals to our rent by default and we realised that if we turned up for every sitting, it was 45p a meal (with unlimited seconds)

I've never been an exercise person, never had any interest in joining a gym or going for a run. I used to bike a fair amount but that was long ago. my problem is I've always been thin, so never felt the need to work out or eat better. but the middle-age metabolism slowdown made me borderline one of those sad guys who is generally thin but with a pot belly. I knew it would get worse in quarantine, so decided to dust off the neglected, 20+ year old Concept 2 rowing machine.

I really miss playing squash and football... it's really bad now. The other day we came out of the supermarket and girlfriend dropped the receipt and it blew away and she said "Fuck it" but I was "no way I'm chasing it down" cos it's the first time I've run in months.
