it's interesting how the delusional disorders, the god complexes all seem to follow the same patterns. a sense of purpose and importance. a desire to change things. to heal. but also a fine line to be trodden which can turn dark really quickly.

I think there are dangers of looking inside ourselves too much, and then talking about it. 'its good to talk'. Yeah but is it? Most of the old religions, they place higher value on not talking I think, unless it's necessary. Like if you can not look at anyone, and not talk to anyone, unless it's absolutely necessary, I think that's what wants to be aimed for

they had to study a lot before getting to the no talking part, though, no?

In The Immortal, Borges has a Roman soldier stumble across a deserted city with a tribe of mute 'troglodytes' living outside who later turn out to be the immortals themselves, one of them Homer. They're around for so long they abandon language and choose to remain in thought at all times.

i mean, if we're talkig about mooji then he's obviously full of shit.

weeeeel. i wouldn't be so sure!

i mean he's EXTREMELY effective.

he's 100% doing it.

his claims of lineage and all that might be tenuous.
his grasp of theology is rudimentary.

but he's definitely doing it.

all that knowledge is out there, in the ether, waiting to be tapped into. it's the same well all those others were drinking from. just very different outcomes

it starts to get slippery to compare them all, although I do think what you have said is correct.

Cos you are not quite comparing like with like. As in, with established religions, theres a lot of other stuff, structures and traditions, that are removed from the central originating figures, that make it into something else, a way of life or a culture or society. Whereas these modern cults like mooji, it's centered very much on the person. Rajneesh the same.

yes, but so many relgions end up boiling down to the same essence at the very base level, no? the packagaing differs wildly but the core ideas often share similarities. too many moving parts over millenia to be able to ever get a full and accurate read on any of it. but there's threads running through them all.

You buy into your own hype and suddenly you believe you're the center of the universe and you're passing around the good vibes like cupcakes. The easily led end up buying into it too. Simbiotic messiania.

probably has a lot in common with people who become “successful” “contemporary” “artists”, ie, lots to do with stage managing the collective conspiracy through which the right people agree you’re legit. More so than simply the result of a torturous personal struggle (although that might be a key part of the branding).

i don’t have much insight into who “the right people” might be in the general guru world.

but the similarity would be in terms of pursuing the acceptance of your guru status from the appropriate gatekeepers, and then soaking up the following that gravitate to that kind of “spiritual life”.

like if you want to establish a bogstandard commercial gallery career you would have to spend a good deal of time networking with the correct gallery owners, and if you’re accepted, due to various charismatic, marketable traits, you will end up on the radar for certain people of the “artistic life”.

you can exploit the various fetishes and tropes of the field, it would be more difficult to jumpstart your ashram career from borehamwood, so you might need an "ethnic" angle. i reckon i’ve got away with chatting a lot of shit about yoga to certain people because i have an indian name.

generally people, even the most desperate enlightenment seekers, understand on some level that the the guru field might be rife with charlatans and chicanery, if you can point to that and send it up the right amount without dismantling it then that would probably help.

my mate keeps banging on about the abraham hicks law of attraction lady and how shes quite a gobby alcoholic in some of her talks which apparently pulls the right crowd. earnest softly spoken people in a beige gown ask her things like “oh i wonder if you might possibly have any advice at all about how one could potentially overcome certain difficulties with their mothers” and she goes “OH FUCK YOUR MOTHER, WHO NEEDS HER?”

goes without saying that surrounding yourself with beautiful young people is essential.

i would think he's bombed out on his his own high. it's very real. it goes beyond the belief/nonbelief thing in that sense.

but on the other hand being deceitful about using it as a device to get as much hot sex as you feel like does require a certain amount of chicanery - even it THAT'S the axis at which self-deception takes place.

Would be interesting to watch the evolution. What actual logistics take place. What proceeded making it a 'career.' What leads him to setting up shop. Did he hire a church hall after karate etc

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooji

In 1987, Mooji had an encounter with a Christian which began his spiritual quest.[5] Mooji continued to work as an art teacher until 1993, when he quit and went traveling in India. [4]

In India he met Papaji and attended his satsangs. He returned to London in 1994 when his son died of pneumonia.[4][3] Mooji visited India to attend Papaji's satsangs over a period of several years. Each time he returned to Brixton, London to sell chai and incense, as well as give away "thoughts for the day" rolled up in straws taken from McDonald's.[3] He became a spiritual teacher in 1999 when a group of spiritual seekers became his students, and began to produce books, CDs, and videos of his teachings.[4] On Tony Moo becoming known as Mooji, Mooji said, "What can I say, except that’s life." Mooji's brother Peter said that people had always followed him wherever he went.[4]

Mooji continues to give satsangs at various locations around the world, regularly attracting over a thousand people from 50 nationalities.[2][4] He also holds meditation retreats, sometimes with up to 850 people, each paying between €600 and €1000 for 7 days, including the cost of satsang.[2] He purchased a 30-hectare property in the parish of São Martinho das Amoreiras, in the Alentejo region of Portugal, and created an ashram called Monte Sahaja.[6] According to Shree Montenegro, the General Manager of Mooji Foundation, there are 20 to 40 people living full-time in the ashram.[2] A fire at the ashram in 2017 required the evacuation of close to 150 people.[7] Activities at the ashram are funded through the UK-based charity Mooji Foundation Ltd., which reported an income of £1.5 million in 2018 (of which nearly £600,000 came from 'donations and legacies'), as well as through income from its trading subsidiaries Mooji Media Ltd in the UK, and Associação Mooji Sangha and Jai Sahaja in Portugal.

1999 was the spark. Would be interesting to watch it grow from there. Also to see if he changed much from then til now.

We can watch the videos and read woebot's link to know what's going on now. It's the evolution I find interesting. What happens in the mind of the guy who goes from affable wise dude with incense in his pocket and little notes in a McDonald's straw to deciding he has to build a compound and claim the throne?
