The way this dude talks is exactly how people sound when they're doing an impression of William Shatner

They have an 80 seat majority and we're years out from an election. He can't change anything until he's in power (this is the problem with seeing the Labour party as something other than it is - it's basically an organisation for gaining electoral power, not any of the other manifold functions, dreams and fantasies that get impressed upon it).

He's definitely made Johnson look like the fucking bluffing asshole he is, a terrible person to be in charge during a crisis, which is exactly what LOTO should be doing, holding the government to account. I think there's been so much distraction and drama the last few years people have forgotten that this it looks like when it's done well.

It reminds me a bit of what Obama had to do. As a black man going for that role, he had to maintain a constant standard in his behaviour and public presentation (it must be incredibly galling to look at what his successor gets away with). I think the LOTO role is a bit similar. If he so much as farts over the next couple of years, it'll be used against him. I am wondering what the attack lines will be, when they emerge.

I'm already heartily sick of people attacking him - apparently from both left and right - for being SSSIIIRRR Keir Starmer, like they think it means he was born in a castle with a valet to wipe his bum for him.

Attack lines taking shape

He owned a field (MoS today)
He's a Sir - The Telegraph

Real paucity of material they have to work with so unconvincing efforts. E grade. Starmer is pretty squeaky clean. He was never an ideologue with RT appearances in the closet, even his opposition to the Iraq war was a legal case not dancing around hugging George Galloway.

I think the reason the Tories is so rattled atm is not just electoral (long way out like I said) - it's their culpability in mishandling Covid.

Jon posted something interesting about his Dad actually owning the tool factory rather than being a shop floor worker so perhaps his working class roots are less substantial than they might've seemed at first. The story stunk of Corbynite sour grapes though so I didn't follow it up. He was named after Keir Hardie though so his parents don't sound exactly salt of the earth whatever the backstory.

Fair enough, that does paint a different picture from the simple "tool maker" description that Wikipedia gives Starmer Snr, although it's still a long way from the implication of hereditary nobility that some people like to make. And as you say, it does smack a bit of sour grapes from Cornyn supporters who are pissed off that the chosen successor RLB didn't win, and who either don't care or choose to ignore that the absolute boy grew up in a house that looks like this:

And on the right, it's surely just massive hypocrisy and disingenuous faux-outrage from journalists who think the sun shines out of Alexander de Pfeffel's ringpiece and who previously (mostly) supported David Cameron, a collateral descendent of Queen Victoria. Like the time the Sun crudely photoshopped Ed Miliband as a 'toff' because it turned out he and his wife live in a house with a second, smaller kitchen.

Out of interest, has anyone from Left Twitter attempted to rationalize the pivot from "it's shocking that centrists are attacking the party leader rather than putting their personal politics aside to focus on beating the Tories who are Literally Worse Than Hitler" to "lol Starmer he's a bit useless innit", or is it something that we're all supposed to pretend not to have noticed?

I think we're supposed not to have noticed.

I'd be interested to know what the online engagement figures - and related revenues - are for sites like The Canary, Skwakbox, and Novara, and if they're dropping, rising even, or staying static. Not enough to actually research it myself of course, but I'll be interested to see how it pans out over the next few years.

Was gonna argue Novara is a cut above the others - actually it is fairly - but why do they publish absolute cock like this:

Since becoming Labour leader, Starmer has so far failed to put any real pressure on Johnson over the coronavirus crisis. But Johnson is only getting an easy ride from Starmer because Starmer is getting an easy ride from the left,

It's from an article I didn't read if anyone wants to knock themselves out.

first as tragedy, then tea talking about the house that corbyn grew up in. Inane, as if anyone cares apart from identity politics weirdos. I wasn't even pro corbyn let alone pro labour (left or otherwise) but low hanging fruit really.

The UK is the worst death toll in Europe and has had possibly the worst response of any country in the world, 10s of thousands of needless deaths, pathetically ineffective, malign or absent leadership and virtually no effective opposition.

Im pretty sure if Corbyn was leader right now and was as invisible and ineffective as Starmer has been during this then he'd be (rightly) getting pilloried for it.

It looks to me like Starmer is terrified of the press and is desperate to be seen as a non-militant centrist alternative so he can gain Murdoch support ala Blair - hence the lack of attacks on the Tories and hesitancy in adopting strong positions.

Everything the UK govt has done in recent years has been an endless series of facepalms, but none compare to its response to Covid.

The circus of Brexit looks even more ridiculous (if that were even possible), the truly heinous response to winter & early spring?s floods & then the surprise that wasn?t a surprise like Covid.

Historically though, the gangs who lead Britain are consistent in their levels of hubris, narcissism & blatant self interest. Inquiries & justice never actualise themselves into real change, discounting standing at football matches. Sorry, had to make light somewhere. Mid Staffs health board & other health authority depts in or close to being put in special measures (Shrewsbury, Morecombe Bay, Cwm Taf), the state of social care, the excuse for a care system involving vulnerable youngsters, the mental health sector, cash for questions & MP?s expenses, it never ends.

Bojo missing repeated Cobra meetings, Hunty McHunt ignoring flu epidemic warnings & lack of preparedness & Michael fucking Gove still having any political career at all. How? Because these sociopaths know they can get away with it due to the entire system being rigged, as it always has been both historically & present-day. Tony Blair hasn?t been tried for war crimes yet, say no more.

All in the game, to quote the old Baltimore tv show adage.

You?re Dublin based? The Irish know better than anyone what to expect from the British political establishment - duplicity, arrogance & hypocrisy to the max every time.
