Zuckerburg can't do normal friendship and romance so he uses nerd brain to deconstruct it, to understand its mechanisms and flows, he decodes and recodes it and builds a new nexus, a new map that tantalises us with its amplified and distorted social pleasures , it seduces us the narcissists we all are now, makes us addicts, drawing energy away from the territory and onto his monetised map til they're inextricably enmeshed, it's his world now. This is nothing to do with autechre I just had a coffee.

This is how The Social Network portrays it, isn't it. Not sure how accurate it is, though.

this one? https://autechre.bleepstores.com/release/185777-autechre-aelivedublin150718 just listened to about 40 minutes and it's pretty uninspiring knob twiddly noise... can't say i'm impressed. if it didn't have autechre on the label i would've turned off. Maybe it gets better.

I have seen them a couple times live tho, in the 00s, and they were fucking brilliant both times. best one in manchester where they played in total darkness, well before this became more of a thing.

Thats the one, played in darkness in a concert hall. Was mind blowing live.

Are autechre the antithesis of dissensus?

impossible. they plough pretty much the same sonic territories as us (80s electro/soul, early breakbeat hardcore, bleeps n bass, dub reggae, electroacoustics, frazzled post-punk) they are just appolachian dissensus taken to its logical limit. the naysayers on here are afraid of that, that you can make fucked up music that is also mathematical and greyed out, as it reconfigures the intelligence vs unintelligent/stupid binary.

I don't know if anyone here would dispute this. Depends what you mean by fucked up...

Never really got AE. There are much more engaging artists in this realm, but I don’t eat cheese or drink coffee either. Maybe that’s a worse crime against good taste according to some than not owning any AE records.

Seems like AE found a niche & stuck with it, for 25+ yrs. Not berating them or there fans, but the myths outweighs the releases.

Yeah, they kinda did the exact opposite. They'd be more popular if they had stuck to their niche.

sure, the hardcore glitch stuff on mego is much more out than AE, but that isn't really dissensus territory. Autechre still retain that mantronix electro element.

Their trajectory is kinda similar to Miles Davis.

Early, universally loved recordings that innovate within an established framework, increasingly experimental work that retains links to the roots of their genre, all out love-it-or-hate-it departures from genre into process driven music.

although we could probably talk about flashcore as an organic development of 90s speedcore ending up at similar territories

right, and another parallel being miles never went truly free jazz, and ythat was his strength. if he went free jazz he'd probably just added to a glut of noise.

although if he went free jazz with 4 303s, now that would have been a different story...

There’s diversity within the pantheon, but you sort of know an AE tune when you hear it, if that makes any sense? There are a spectrum of influences within their sound, but I guess it’s down to taste whether that sound world stays with a listener or not. Art is subjective, so by all means crack on with them, I would be being a dick to say otherwise. Just not my bag really & I get v mild eczema from 1 out of the 3 traits.

I love them in the same way I love tricky. They took hip hop (or electro or whatever you wanna call it) and made it their own. Also they should get love just for all the long mixes they put out. I prefer these to their recent productions. They wanna share the gold they have found. Also I love how they started in graf and BMX and just general messing about.
