continuing the 'old autechre' theme, i was reading this old thread:
hard 80s hip-hop.... most of the videos are unfortunately dead, but there's a post from an old member, drilla, of a JVC Force tune, which is really good and then he also includes an Autechre (well, Rob Brown, and before Autechre presumably) remix. Also very good, but maybe not as good as the original...
youtube was lacking so I had to put these up myself:
JVC Force - The Force is the Boss
and a wacky but dope remix by one of the guys in Autechre that was on a leaked hip hop mixtape he made for a friend.
I ended up listening to the entire JVC Force album and it's really good as well, slightly dated MCing but excellent production:
So I was looking for more of these old Autechre edits, where they were taking their favourite hip hop and making it more complex.... that mix Version posted is good but I can't find any more of the actual edits.
But I did find this
and listened to about an hour of it the other night.
I like all the long autechre mixes but this is sort of a special one even within that genre, cos it's exclusively 80s hip hop. alot of the others are 12 hours or more and much more varied, but this is interesting cos of the tighter focus.
and i think they're doing a lot of live edits. like the version of 'no sell out' seems to be something they've messed with quite a lot. i might be wrong tho.
the whole thing is great, very hard and crisp, and quite fast. definitely the sweet spot between hip hop and rave.
You can hear in it what Autechre later become, I think. In that focus on the tuff drums, but rearranging them in a very detailed way to create melody. So that's where they put their extra work in, added different instrumentation to complement that arrangement.
