Yeah it was surreal watching it live. Even switching between Fox and MSNBC, largely the same shocked commentary.

I was horrified at first then found some of the pictures funny then settled into an uneasiness about the whole thing.

The stuff about loads of the people plotting to kidnap Whitmer turning out to be working for the FBI, a bunch of the Proud Boys working for them too and then the guy leading the Oath Keepers on Jan. 6 allegedly having worked for them and holding a top-secret security clearance for decades makes me wonder how genuine the threat is.

Chris Morris was interviewed on Channel 4 a couple of years ago talking about this sort of thing.

One of the big political moves happening at the moment is the ongoing capture of the Republican Party by Trumpism which includes a rhetorical shift around Jan 6 from condemnation to mitigation and even justification. The radicalisation of the GOP mainstream has been happening at political warp-speed in the last 12 months, so I guess I’m viewing it in that context.
