  • So Lovecraft was a racist, but is still not quite cancelled?
  • R Kelly, the paedo/sex abuser, cancelled? I would still like to be able to hear his tunes, but i don't think it's allowed now
  • MJ likewise, but his tunes are canonical?
  • Conrad was a bit racist too, but is not cancelled, afaik
  • I personally cancelled Tea for racist outbursts
  • Weinstein - i guess there should be a list of movies that he made that we should avoid
  • but Woodie Allen, is he on his way to rehabilitation now?
  • our own Nina, could we rehabilitate her? How??

It's not black and white, is it? and i'm definitely not arguing for these beasts,
obviously there are all kinds of factors and complexities - the gravity of the offence - was it just words or was it actions? was it a crime? did they do the time? Did they apologise? who suffered?
how far back was it? how much water has passed under the bridge? how have our attitudes changed since?

Should we have a consistent reaction, or is there space fot personal subjectivity? Are some cancellations undermined by our own prejudices?

How come our puritanical impulses have deepened in some respects but not others? How does Boris sail through?

So many questions,
Can we have a policy clarification, please, or at least some robust guidance

There might be some big sins I haven't heard about but Nina is not cancelled as far as I know. She's just been on a weird journey. She can come and talk to the lads any time. I'd love to hear from her.

I think this is always going to be something that ultimately comes down to gut feeling. You could have two people accused of exactly the same thing with wildly different responses from the public based on whether or not they like them, their work etc.

Case in point, the response to Boris being accused of anything in comparison to your average MP being accused of something.

With Lovecraft and Conrad (not remotely comparable btw in that Lovecraft was a wild white supremacist and Conrad was a bit 'racist' sort of, but not really) people just go well they were all, racist back then. It's like how racist Nans get a pass

For a long time 70s people could go, well we were all a bit paedo then but that's sort,of caught up with (some of them) now (lots are still protected)

Wasn't Lovecraft alarmingly racist even for his time? I've heard he even looked down on white people who spoke with an American rather than English accent.

Yeah he was in the top tier even for those days

I think the big difference here is that Lovecraft died about a hundred years ago where as R Kelly is wandering the earth paedo-ing right now (like probably literally right now).
For one thing "it was a different time then" of course which does mean something, but also nothing I or anyone else can do is gonna have any effect on HP for better or for worse - it's not going to change his behaviour and he's not going to profit by it. Whereas with R Kelly, to be honest I'm not a huge fan of his music anyway, but if I was, I think I'd feel a bit uneasy about spending money on it if I knew it was gonna be put towards maintaining a harem of kidnapped women. I'm not sure stopping buying his stuff will make him mend his ways, but it make have some kind of effect, who knows.

That's interesting, I've never heard anyone use that particular defence. In my experience people just sort of tend to glaze over and then move on and vote for him anyway.
