Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
It's a response worthy of 1960s China and the grovelling apologies forced upon the victims of Mao's Cultural Revolution. But that would be appropriate, because a cultural revolution is exactly what is taking place in today's America, where the woke mob has surrounded the citadels of democracy – newspapers, magazines, television stations and, of course, universities.

Dissenters live in fear. Serious debate is all but silenced
my bit is from the mail on sunday by the way it's not a response to benny
To be honest it's pretty similar in tone to some of the stuff you've written yourself.

it's funny you say that cos when i was writing those things i was going to use you as an example of the baa baa black sheep tendency but i decided there was no need to make it personal. i thought i'd be mature and responsible. i now regret that decision.

Good. There are certain standards that have to be upheld!

what i have an interest in is preserving the freedom to be loose and flippant and lazily provocative against thin lipped prudes, sententious moralisers and conformists of all stripes. it's not an especially noble cause but it's my cause.

but also, to do that, i think i need to make it clear that i am on the side of the Good and the True against the Forces of Evil

so if i feel im offering succour to the Forces of Evil and they are getting excited thinking i might be secretly on their side I have to reassert my allegiances.

“Individuals with a prostrate” is fine and would be more inclusive for transwomen.

Perhaps the reason why this hasn’t been seen so much is that in the UK at least smear tests are massively more common than tests for prostrate cancer.
No, I don't think it's anything to do with this. It's the same thing as organisations like Planned Parenthood using the term 'menstruators' but never 'ejaculators'

See, if they want to get rid of the word 'woman' it follows that you need to get rid of 'man' as well - as if that's gonna happen!

It’s interesting to watch someone like Louis ck strike this balance, when they reassure the audience, the ratios

It is about a lot of things to a lot of people, Benny. But what it’s about for me is what I’ve written.

He’s obviously lost the audience completely now. But he was a master at treading that line

ive never watched him tbh i dont like comedy but obviously it wasnt a weakness of his act that lead him to lose his audience. he didnt miscalculate there. the whole thing about dancing around that line, and the fact that it is a line, means you'll transgress it from time to time. but also the act of dancing along it, draws attention to that line and clarifies our sense of it. it's a socially useful operation and we'll always have people employed to do it.

The inclusivity is important because lots of trans women won’t know they have a prostate. That’s because a lot of people don’t know what it is, what it does, can’t spell it. so it’s important to use plain language to reach ppl most at risk (men over 50... and especially black men and people with family history) so using ‘men’ up front works, but also needs the caveat where appropriate. There’s also all the associated health outcome stuff related to masculinity, men not speaking to their doctor or looking after health for all kinds of reasons, another reason it’s important to address and talk about men

Getting your knob out and waving it at women who didn't ask for a knob-waving probably doesn't help, either.

I was gonna say almost exactly the same thing, but swap out 'prostrate' for 'cervix' and 'men' for 'women'

it's also about what leeway to give to 'bad' impulses, how we express them, how we think about their truth-claims, how we keep them in check

good to acknowledge sometimes. I like to express a lot of my idiotic thoughts and impulses, to be honest about them, lay them out. Not publicly, in good conversation (sometimes here) but If you’re into that it means you also have to do a lot managing people who are salivating at the opportunity to humiliate

institutional sexism exists, is bad, and should be opposed. I don't think anyone here would disagree with that.

respecting and including trans (and non-binary etc) people doesn't somehow enable institutional sexism

I'm not really clear if you're making that connection or not? but it kind of seems like it

either way, trans rights and fighting sexism are aligned rather than opposed goals. things like that are the core of intersectional feminism.

john is on the money, these are such poorly chosen hills to die on. it's almost as if little to no thought goes into choosing them.

I'm sure the Twitter reaction was, like every Twitter reaction ever, overblown, but that MP picked the fight. no one forced her to.

and she could've very easily walked it back to a place of basic respect

it's reminiscent of the ugly rear-guard actions fought against gay marriage, that it somehow diminishes heterosexual marriage

or nonsense like including people besides Christians somehow being a War on Christmas

as if including trans and non-binary people somehow diminishes the womanhood of cisgendered women
