A select few producers here and there have done that. Instant cancellation follows.

People like to think because dance music has it's roots in marginalised communities - queer and POC - that it's somehow less likely to have shitty people behaving shittily. It's simply not true - in 2020 that context is all but gone and it's obvious from comments sections and Twitter trolls that the culture is just as bad as anything you see in rock and indie.

The rush for business techno bros to defend Ten Walls' yesteryear comments as "freedom of speech!1!1!" was one of the most depressing things I've ever seen play out

There's a world of difference between "X is a creep" and "on this day X did this specific thing that made me react"
Yeah, exactly. If they can get sources, even if people prefer to go unnamed, then they should. It hampers any attempt to dismiss it as vague rumours or gossip and allows them to verify before publishing.

I can accept the argument if we cancel everyone from history. No exceptions. And destroy all statues, rename all buildings, streets etc and just number them or assign generic nondescript names.

He is not “cancelled from history” though.

And not just any shitty people - shitty powerful people.

yeah, but also something as mundane as the music industry and clubs. shitty record label owners cheating artists out of royalties, shitty club owners and promoters cheating performers and DJs out of their cut, shitty mafia types extorting protection money from club owners and demanding the drug business, etc.

this is exactly right. it's totally reasonable to have a different standard for public veneration.

I'm ready in general hear arguments for historical context. here an expert makes it perfectly clear that even by the standards of his day Hume was racist.

everyone is still free to read Hume, or books about Hume

you can't actually erase people from history. it was impossible 2000 years ago in the days of damnatio memoriae, let alone now.

you can choose who you publicly venerate

I don't know about this particular case but I do know as a rule of thumb that statues, monuments etc aren't really about their subjects

they're about the motives of the people putting up the statues

Confederate statues, for example, have by and large nothing to do with memorializing Confederate soldiers

they were promoting the Lost Cause myth and its attendant politics, very explicitly including the reinforcement of Jim Crow era white supremacy

and even if they were about memorializing Confederate soldiers, why should we?

why should we publicly memorialize men who fought a devastating war in the name of slavery?

why should the University of Edinburgh associate itself with a racist who chose to profit from the slave trade?

I say the burden of proof is on people who want to maintain these statues, monuments, named buildings
