Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
It never ceases to amaze me that the far right are so obsessed with London being a hellhole with Sadiq overseeing stabbings all over the shop and Muslamic no go areas. London has its problems but it fundamentally works better in terms of integration than loads of other places.

There was that one month a few years ago when the most peaceful month in New York's entire history coincided with the most violent month in London for several years, and there was one more murder in London than there was in New York, which has never happened before or since, and it's become part of US alt-right doctrine that London is now "officially" more violent than New York, and law-abiding white people can't leave their front door without being either shot by a Jamaican crack dealer, stabbed/run over by a jihadi, or both at the same time.

There's a cognitive dissonance at work around this stuff too. People will crack homophobic jokes in front of me because "I'm not like them." You might have a best pal from primary school of a different race who you kicked a ball with in childhood but that's not going to counter the bombardment of ideology about people who are... different

It's interesting. For Barty the sign of a healthy integrated multicultural society is everyone making racist jokes. That was his experience of school where he was the only white person in a lot of his classes. In my day that was a definite no-go.

yep BoxJoy's post made me think of Barty too, i think he was a little overconfident in that respect

I spent a lot of time as the only white guy in the room so i know what Barty means, but taking for granted that people will automatically perceive your wokeness is not a viable strategy

Thing is, it does depend. I know plenty of people who wouldn't mind, but also plenty who would so it seems safest not to go there. Spesh if yr whiteman

What's key is all races get an equal share. I went to school with Mexicans and they are as wont to make racial jabs at latinos as they are at white people. You dont really get that same reflexivity from the whites.

Does barty have any black friends? Like close ones, who he might go to their house or whatever?
That hardly makes a difference, unless you use that friend as a way to learn about their experiences, again, it's not automatic.
I learned a lot about racism by seeing how my black partner got treated, but not so much from her directly

Lots of stuff being written about how the whites are learning from identity politics and constructing a white identity

When I was a teenager I didn't think homophobia and discrimination were real because I had a bubble of schoolfriends who didn't give a fuck, and everyone else who seemed to was just a provincial backwater villager who I was going to outgrow being around anyway. It wasn't until I was older and in the reality of opportunities and privileges that I realised how this stuff does work, the experience is very different from the idea of it.

I first learned when going from elementary to middle school, all of my white friends parents opted to put them in a private school instead of the public feeder school (95% hispanic) for vague reasons about danger/crime. Of course the actual experience of the school was just a bunch of dumb 12 year olds.
