i have been thinking about music listening enjoyment recently. so much of mine is definitely based upon shared experience of some kind or another, whether its ability to discuss with friends, like you do when youve read same book, or going out to a club and hearing something new, sharing with others.

boring points, im sure already been discussed.

this group listening thing: two things:

1. years ago i remember bill gates saying how him and his girlfriend, living in different cities, would pick a film to watch that was playing at roughly same time, then they would both go watch and talk on phone after. i remember at time thinking 'geek' but its the reality now isnt it.

2. tim burgess is doing a listening party thing on twitter which is popular atm

turmeric tea, incense, mood lighting. the setting for this kind of music is all important. i'm about to go have a bath, maybe that's the right setting, if i decide to listen to it, i;ll let you know

for me it's definitely a deliberate tactic to restore some of musics lost power. as well as to create a biut oif energy and shared party fun time among the people on the forum,

try and hold off till we have the party if you can. evening is usually best becasue people need to have finished work and version needs to be awake.

music without people to discuss it with, or enjoy with in the moment, is no longer music. it requires those tetherings to be real.

if there's anough people in the room and the energy is right we can do it tonight. you just never know though. you have to gauge the vibrations.

music is different to film and books in that way - its more collective in its inception. big innovation and driver for cinema was when they got it working as shared experience. books have always been mainly a solitary activity. bookish as an insult.

does mcluhan say books create the private self? he might do. it's the sort of thing he'd say

equally you can say music forms a collective body. gets everyone vibrating on the same frequency

i find that a lot more inspiring becasue it gives me an image of what the music will allow me to attain.
