rhythm basics thread

woops

is not like other people
"What does Barty (or woops) know? He doesn't get rhythm. He's not sensual. When it comes to the art of house drum programming, you can't beat the US. It's the hi hats and the snares. Placement. Timing. Dynamics. Sound design. So much finesse. Different level of sophistication. Tell him from me he don't know fuck all about beats."

genuinely want to be convinced and educated

If you like So Whatcha Sayin by EPMD, there’s hope. The lick on that beat is as solid as the use of any US house rhythms yet to be cited even if it’s a straight sample. It bumps. It’s clearly been expertly adjusted too. Different tempos & styles of beats might be a way in, as an intro, without direct comparisons yet.

If you want to get into a debate about drum programming, that’s a bit different. If you don’t like house though, what’s the point in trying to radicalise you or change your mind? This music has been around for decades. Written language isn’t always the best tool to define what your ears hear.

It's a result of growing up listening to jazz, funk, latin, disco etc. Bigger melting pots of rhythm based musics in the neighborhoods of those key cities, basically. Add to that the influence of the church and you can begin to understand why house music is what it is, and is able to endure while all the rest fall by the wayside.

ironically most (mainstream) house after the 90s has the most static european teutonic trance drum programming. So this doesn't hold up.

if you wanna say chicago/new york fair but even there hip hop is far more endured.

And I'm a house fan but you're more likely to find rhythmic inflection in techno after a certain while if anything.

This obliquely reminds me of that thread from yonks ago where Zhao was railing against four to the floor as the death of all human feeling or something.

BTB "You can't dance to that" is up there with "It's just not funny" in my pantheon of meaningless statements.

Once again you're dealing in your own absolutes which are simply wrong. 90s may be the high watermark but until now there is still good shit getting made, which is more than can be said for most genres which peaked in the 90s.
